Kef fire risk 05/08/22: High

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8676 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0486 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1526 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9537 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Sir Keir Starmer found to have breached MPs’ code of conduct
The Labour leader failed to register eight interests on time, but parliamentary watchdog said ‘there was no deliberate attempt to mislead’

Sir Keir Starmer has been found to have breached the MPs’ code of conduct by failing to register on time eight interests, including gifts from football teams and the sale of a plot of land.

An inquiry into the Labour leader was opened in June by Kathryn Stone, the parliamentary standards commissioner, relating to claims about the late declaration of earnings and gifts, benefits or hospitality from UK sources.

Speaking at the time, Sir Keir said he was “absolutely confident” that he had not broken the MPs’ code of conduct.

The commissioner has now found that the leader of the Opposition failed to register eight interests - five more than the ones alleged in the original complaint.

However, she noted that the “breaches were minor and/or inadvertent, and that there was no deliberate attempt to mislead”.

‘Magnificent’ jellyfish found off coast of Papua New Guinea could be new species

A scuba diver has captured footage of a “magnificent” jellyfish off the coast of Papua New Guinea, exciting marine biologists who think it could be a new species.

The jellyfish was initially thought to be a variety spotted only once before, off the coast of far north Queensland almost 25 years ago.

The video was captured by Dorian Borcherds, who owns Scuba Ventures in Kavieng, in the New Ireland province of Papua New Guinea.

He enlisted the help of his daughter in South Africa, who uploaded the video to the Jellyfish app, a project Dr Lisa-ann Gershwin, a jellyfish expert at Australian Marine Stinger Advisory Services, co-founded.

When Dr Gershwin saw the footage, she thought it was a video of the second sighting of a mysterious jellyfish – Chirodectes maculatus – which was found on the Great Barrier Reef in 1997. However the expert now believes the creature is a new species.

Truss faces fresh questions over ‘Fizz with Liz’ champagne dinner
Exclusive: MPs must declare any gifts, benefits or hospitality with a value over £300

Liz Truss is embroiled in fresh controversy after a leaked email left her facing questions over why she did not declare thousands of pounds spent on schmoozing Tory MPs in the run up to her bid to succeed Boris Johnson.

Around a dozen Conservative MPs attended a so-called “Fizz with Liz” champagne dinner hosted by the foreign secretary at Mayfair members club 5 Hertford St last year.

The event was paid for by club owner, multimillionaire aristocrat Robin Birley.

Former cabinet minister David Davis, who is supporting Mr Sunak, said: “We have just lost one prime minister after he broke the rules and couldn’t bring himself to tell the whole truth to the House of Commons. It would be a tragedy if a would-be prime minister did the same before they even got into Downing Street.”

Intelligence chief quits over wiretapping ‘oversights,’ as close aide to PM steps down

The head of Greece’s National Intelligence Service (EYP) stepped down on Friday, citing “oversights in the process of statutory inspections” in his letter of resignation to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Panagiotis Kontoleon had submitted his resignation “following mistaken actions found during lawful wiretapping procedures,” the prime minister’s office said in a statement.

Under Greek law, a prosecutor is required to sign off on any surveillance.

Kontoleon’ resignation came as a close aid to Mitsotakis, Grigoris Dimitriadis, also stepped down.

Rishi Sunak tells Tory members of his work diverting public funds from ‘deprived urban areas’

Tory leadership contender Rishi Sunak has told Conservative party members he had been working to divert funding from “deprived urban areas” towards more prosperous towns.

The former chancellor said he had started changing public funding formulas to ensure more prosperous towns receive “the funding they deserve”.

The New Statesman magazine, which obtained video revealing Mr Sunak’s remarks, said they were made to grassroots Tories in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, on July 29, as part of his campaigning for the Tory leadership.

Foreign Office minister, Lord Zac Goldsmith said: “This is one of the weirdest – and dumbest – things I’ve ever heard from a politician.”

Major NHS computer outage caused by cyber attack

A major outage of some NHS services across the UK was caused by a cyber-attack, it has been confirmed.

Advanced, a firm that provides digital services for NHS 111, said the attack occurred at 07:00 BST on Thursday.

The attack impacted the NHS 111 phone service, and prevented patients being referred to out-of-hours GPs.

Letter deliveries to be delayed until 5pm in Royal Mail shake-up
Delivery times moved later in effort to offer bigger parcel service

Thousands of households across Britain will not receive their post until after six o’clock in the evening under a major shake-up proposed by Royal Mail.

The postal service wants to push back deliveries until later in the day as part of plans to deliver parcels more quickly.

With many online shopping orders now made late at night, bosses want postmen and women to set off on their rounds later to give time for “next day” packages to arrive at sorting offices.

But modelling of the changes has found this could mean more than 100 areas of Britain get their post at 5pm or later, the Telegraph can reveal.
