Kef fire risk 12/08/22: Medium

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8711 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0648 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1480 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9391 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:

One of the mega yachts dotted around Ithaka is the Shemara. Originally built in 1938 for Sir Bernard Docker, managing director of the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) and chairman of Daimler. Between 1939-1946 she was requisitioned by the Royal Navy. She was purchased by Charles Dunston, founder of Carphone Warehouse, in 2010 and re-fitting was completed in 2014. Now available for private charter. Accommodates 18 plus crew of 16.

89,229 passengers arrived at Kef airport this July compared to 76,809 in July 2019, a record breaking year. An increase of just over 16% (according to my maffs).

Salman Rushdie, author of Satanic Verses, stabbed in neck on stage in New York

Indian-born British writer Rushdie, whose earlier writing led to death threats and a fatwa from the Iranian regime, was pictured lying on the ground of Chautauqua Institution's stage near the city of Buffalo in western New York.

An Associated Press reporter witnessed a man storm the stage at the Chautauqua Institution and begin stabbing Rushdie as he was being introduced.

The attacker is said to have been taken in custody.

Freya the Walrus could be killed by Norway authorities if people don’t stay away

A beloved 700kg walrus lounging away her summer in Oslo Harbour may have to be euthanised over fears she could pose a serious danger to sightseers.

Freya, whose namesake is the Norse goddess of beauty and love, fast became a national treasure in Norway for her sinking of several unwitting boats she hoped might make suitable sunbeds.

Post Office workers to strike on same day as Royal Mail walkout
Staff will take industrial action on three dates later this month as they say their current pay deal is ‘incredibly insulting’

Post Office workers are to stage fresh strikes in escalating action over pay.

Members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) will walk out on August 26, 27 and 30, with some of the action coinciding with strikes by BT, Openreach and Royal Mail employees.

It will be the fourth round of action by Post Office workers, including those in so-called crown offices - the larger branches often sited on high streets - and in administration and the supply chain.

Around 2,000 crown office, supply chain and admin grade workers will stop work on August 26, the same day as 115,000 postmen and women from all parts of the UK go on strike in a separate row over pay.

Crown office employees will strike again on August 27, while supply chain and admin members of the union will walk out on August 30.
