Kef fire risk 15/08/22: Medium

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8726 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0594 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1460 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9439 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Migrants Stranded on Islet in Evros River Abandoned to Die

A group of nearly 40 migrants reportedly stranded on an islet in Evros River, where the borders of Greece and Turkey meet, have continued to plead for help as none of the two countries assumes responsibility for their rescue.

The islet is not on Greek territory, the Hellenic Police Directorate said on Thursday and Sunday, adding that Turkish authorities have been notified to provide emergency help and evacuation.

Cats to be freed from special lockdown in German town

Cat owners in one German town will be allowed to let their pets out for the first time in three months when the authorities lift a special lockdown.

People in Walldorf, in the south-west, were ordered in May to keep their cats indoors to protect an endangered bird.

Cats were only allowed to venture outside if they were kept on a leash no more than two metres (6ft) in length.

But the animals will again be allowed to roam free from 00:01 local time on Monday.

No 10 defends PM's holiday as removal vans seen in Downing Street

Boris Johnson will be kept informed of any "urgent issues" while on holiday this week, Downing Street has said.

The prime minister - who was criticised for taking a holiday earlier this month amid growing economic turmoil - is now on another break.

It comes as removal vans were spotted in Downing Street earlier on Monday.

The PM's spokesman confirmed Mr Johnson would return from holiday at the weekend, when he will have two weeks to move out of his No 10 flat.

It was reported over the weekend that he is spending a week in Greece, with locals spotting him shopping alongside wife Carrie in a supermarket in Nea Makri, a town to the east of Athens.

Covid: UK first country to approve dual-strain vaccine

The UK has become the first country to approve a dual vaccine which tackles both the original Covid virus and the newer Omicron variant.

Ministers say the vaccine will now form part of the autumn booster campaign.

Moderna thinks 13 million doses of its new vaccine will be available this year, but 26 million people are eligible for some form of booster.

Health officials say people should take whichever booster they are offered as all jabs provide protection.

British tourist pranks passengers by announcing six-hour flight delays at Greek airport

A British man was allegedly held in a police questioning room for hours after he tricked fellow passengers by announcing fake flight delays at an airport in Greece.

The man, whose name has not been shared, was filmed taking over the tannoy system at an unattended boarding gate desk in Zakynthos Airport on the island of Zante on Friday 12 August.

In footage posted on social media, an airport security guard storms over to the desk to confront the man.

A police officer follows the guard, who leads the man away from the desk by grabbing his arm.

The man was reportedly separated from his friends and detained for questioning for three hours.

‘Serious concerns’ over Covid booster rollout as GPs say they can’t afford to offer jabs

Doctors have raised ‘serious concerns’ over the autumn rollout of Covid boosters as GPs warn a cut in government funding means many can no longer afford to offer jabs.

The UK Health Security Agency announced it will offer a new Omicron-specific jab, by Moderna, to over 50s, as part of its latest vaccination programme due to start in September.

But leaders of major GP practices have told The Independent that reduced funding at a time of rising costs and staff shortages makes the jab “unviable”.

The pay of the top 1% of earners across the UK – those already on more than £170,000 a year – is rising at an average annualised rate of 9.1%, according to an analysis of Office for National Statistics data.

At the same time, those in the lowest 10% – those earning below £8,000 a year – have seen their pay rise by just 1.3%. That’s far below the rate of inflation, currently at a 40-year high of 9.4% and forecast by the Bank of England to hit 13% in the coming months. The latest tranche of pay data from the ONS, due to be released on Tuesday, is expected to show even greater increases at the top and anaemic growth at the bottom.
