Kef fire risk 26/08/22: Medium

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8682 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0269 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1518 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9738 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

More than 100,000 Royal Mail workers to stage ‘summer’s biggest strike’ on Friday

More than 100,000 Royal Mail workers are preparing to walk out in less than 24 hours in a move that will cause widespread disruption to postal services across the country.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said its members are striking on Friday for a “dignified, proper pay rise” after they voted in favour by 97.6% in a ballot.

Friday's strike will be followed by further stoppages on Wednesday August 31, Thursday, September 8 and Friday, September 9.

Boris Johnson supporters tantalisingly close to their dream of a veto on PM’s ousting
Petition calling for constitution to be altered to allow vote on whether to accept premier’s resignation nears required 10,000 signatures

A campaign to force the Tory Party to give its members a vote on whether Boris Johnson should have been forced to resign has nearly enough support for a rule change.

The party has confirmed 8,700 Tory party members have signed a petition organised by the ConservativePost website and Lord Cruddas, the former party treasurer, demanding a veto on whether to accept Mr Johnson's resignation.

The figure is short of the 10,000 threshold that could force the party to act under its constitution.

It means that if a further 1,300 validated members sign the petition, the party will have to look at changing its constitution and allow a ballot on whether to accept Mr Johnson's resignation.

This would potentially throw the existing leadership election into chaos, as any ballot will almost certainly take place after the winner has been announced a week on Monday.

The scientist who says plants can make decisions
Spanish researcher Paco Calvo claims certain flora are effectively sentient agents of their own destiny – but sceptics think he’s crazy

When Prince Charles first revealed in 1986 that he enjoyed talking – and listening – to plants, he was widely ridiculed. But perhaps the heir to the throne had a point. Rather than being out of his tree, he was simply ahead of his time.

Certainly that is the view of Paco Calvo, a professor of the philosophy of science at the University of Murcia in Spain... who in a new book argues that, far from being simply passive foliage, the little green cells that constitute plant life quite literally have a mind of their own.

Get Ipsi home!

Hi we are Nicole and Joe and we need your help to bring our girl Ipsi home to England.

We are a young couple who are just trying to do some good in the world. Starting with this!

We decided to come out to greece to visit family and have some time over here. After being here a week or two we were on our way to dinner when we noticed a very skinny, unwell, abandoned german sheperd pup by the side of the road. She was totally dehydrated, so much that she could not stand walk or even stand up for longer than a moment. We could not just leave her there! However, we were on a scooter. And that's where the journey begins...

LastPass developer systems hacked to steal source code

Password management firm LastPass was hacked two weeks ago, enabling threat actors to steal the company's source code and proprietary technical information.

LastPass says there is no evidence that customer data or encrypted password vaults were compromised.

LastPass is one of the largest password management companies in the world, claiming to be used by over 33 million people and 100,000 businesses.

Last year, LastPass suffered a credential stuffing attack that allowed threat actors to confirm a user's master password. It was also revealed that LastPass master passwords were stolen by threat actors distributing the RedLine password-stealing malware.

Due to this, it is vital to enable multi-factor authentication on your LastPass accounts so that threat actors won't be able to access your account even if your password is compromised.

Drinking hot tea or coffee almost triples your risk of throat cancer
Study finds people most likely to consume hot drinks were 2.8 times the risk of esophageal cancer than non-drinkers

Drinking hot coffee or tea almost triples your risk of throat cancer, a study from the University of Cambridge has found.

Roughly 10,000 people a year in the UK are diagnosed with esophageal cancer and the latest findings suggest a person can reduce their risk by giving up hot drinks.

Those who prefer a tepid brew were found to be at 2.7 times more risk than non-drinkers, while “hot” had a 5.5-fold increase in risk, and “very hot” 4.1 times greater.

MPs shielded from latest price cap spike
Taxpayers face monthly bills of £500 but MPs are not incentivised to be conservative, campaigners warn

MPs will be shielded from the latest 80pc increase in energy bills as there is no limit to what they can claim on expenses.

Some politicians have been refunded amounts far higher than the current or forecasted energy price cap on average energy bills. Ofgem, the energy regulator, today announced its cap would rise from £1,971 to £3,549 on October 1.

This week Boris Johnson said the public should endure higher bills as the "Ukrainians are paying in blood". However, MPs can claim back energy bills for either their London or their constituency home paid for by the taxpayer.

Brexit promised to ‘take back control’. Now foreign nationals are arriving in their droves
The number of work, study and other visas issued has increased by 83 per cent to 1,115,099 in the 12 months to June

Few would have imagined when Boris Johnson pledged to take back control of the UK’s borders that two years later Britain would be allowing in record numbers of foreign workers, students and families.

His ending of free movement through Brexit has significantly reduced the numbers of EU citizens migrating to the UK but they have been replaced by a doubling in non-EU workers and a huge increase in overseas students, both bringing with them families and children.

It has been fuelled by the NHS, businesses and other services plugging shortages, universities targeting overseas students to compensate for caps on home tuition fees and record numbers of humanitarian visas for Ukrainians, Hong Kongers and Afghans.

Most heart attacks and strokes could be prevented if everyone got a good night’s sleep
Study found that, compared to the worst sleepers, healthy over-50s who were well rested saw risk of heart disease or stroke fall by 75pc

Seven in ten heart attacks and strokes could be prevented if everyone could simply get a decent night’s sleep, a major study suggests.

Researchers tracked more than 7,000 healthy over-50s for a decade - and found just one in 10 regularly got a good night’s sleep.

Compared to the worst sleepers, those who were well rested saw their risk of heart disease or stroke fall by 75 per cent. Scientists estimate if all adults regularly slept well, then the number of heart attacks and strokes would fall by 72 per cent.

Are octopuses too intelligent to eat?
As a £50m 'humane' octopus farm prepares to open, protestors insist the animals' brains make them an unsuitable supper

This is partly due to an Oscar-winning Netflix documentary, My Octopus Teacher, which became a surprise hit when it was released two years ago. Following a freediver who develops an intimate bond with a female cephalopod, it helped to recast the creatures in the court of public opinion by showing how intelligent and sensitive they are. Conservationist Jane Goodall called the film ‘absolutely unbelievable. One of the best movies ever.’

Huge dinosaur skeleton unearthed in Portuguese garden

The remains of what could be the largest dinosaur ever discovered in Europe are being excavated in a Portuguese back garden.

The fossilised skeleton of a sauropod was discovered in the central city of Pombal in 2017, when a man began building work on his house.

Sauropods were the biggest of all dinosaurs and the largest land animals to have ever lived.

'Abhorrent' hunting footage 'showing animal released into pack of hounds' investigated by police

Video like this is believed to be extremely rare. It's believed to show a group of men from the Seavington Hunt and an excited pack of fox hounds surrounding a quad bike.

A heavily weighted bag is lifted from a box on the quad bike. The hounds are held back while the bag is opened. The hounds close in as the bag is held up and turned upside down. They are trained to follow fox scent.

The animal is let out of the bag in amongst the hounds and the chase begins.

The 50p-a-day multi-pill that could cut heart deaths by a third

A polypill to free middle-aged and elderly people from a daily cocktail of drugs could cut heart deaths by a third, research suggests.

Those prescribed the drug, which contains three medications in one, were far more likely to keep taking the tablets than those who had to take them separately, the study found.

Scientists said the cheap medication, which combines a statin with medication for blood pressure and a drug to stop clots forming, should become standard treatment for many patients.
