British nationals in Greece appear in court over 300kg cocaine destined for Australia, Europe
The men – who can be named for the first time following the start of the case – were held in June 2022 after a dramatic raid by armed officers in scenes straight out of a Hollywood blockbuster.
The four men – three of whom were brought under heavy security from Thessaloniki jail where they have been on remand - were named in court as Neil Jones, 46, Anthony Bennett, 49, John Ellis, 39, and Stephen Wray, 52, and all are from Liverpool.
A fifth man – Ryan Ellis – also from Liverpool, is charged along with them, with drug trafficking and is currently in jail in Holland where Dutch authorities have refused to hand him over because of 'conditions in Greek jails', it emerged.
Greek authorities say the arrest of the four men sparked a global manhunt for the ringleader of the gang, who has been dubbed a 'British Pablo Escobar' as he is the link between the Colombian cartels and a vast European network of traffickers.
Footage released in June last year showed heavily armed officers raiding a luxury £1,700 a month villa 20 miles from Thessaloniki which was being used as a base for the men.
They were held after 297kg of cocaine was found in a consignment of bananas that had arrived in the Greek port city last summer said to be worth £42 million. https://greekcitytimes.com/2023/09/27/british-nationals-in-greece-appear-in-court-over-300kg-cocaine-destined-for-australia-europe/

Greece is planning a major regularization program for migrants to cope with labor crunch
Greece’s minister for migration said Tuesday that the government is planning a major regularization program for migrants to meet pressing demands in the labor market despite a recent increase in illegal arrivals.
Dimitris Kairidis told state-run radio that the program would target an estimated 300,000 migrants who are undocumented or whose residence permits have expired to help address acute labor shortages in agriculture, construction and tourism. https://apnews.com/article/greece-migration-labor-economy-ace2e3faac525e58e2eb7151b08b8ff9

Epidemiologists investigate two leptospirosis deaths on Corfu
The deaths occurred in the northern village of Karousades. On Friday, a man from the village died from the infection shortly after being admitted to hospital. His was the second death from leptospirosis since May. In a third case, a man was transferred to hospital in Athens in a critical condition but is now out of danger.
Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease carried by many animals, mainly rodents. It cannot be transferred from person to person but only through contact (through the mouth, nose, eyes) or consumption of water contaminated with urine from an infected animal.
Weil’s disease is the most severe form of the infection. https://www.ekathimerini.com/news/1220953/epidemiologists-investigate-two-leptospirosis-deaths-on-corfu/
