A new communication system donated to the Greek Police (ELAS) by the British government is expected to go into operation in the next four to six months, Kathimerini understands.

British police recently provided ELAS with a wiretapping system, similar to the one used by Greece’s intelligence service and counter-terrorism unit.

In a related development, ELAS was in the coming days expected to announce a deal to buy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), better known as drones. The drones will be used to monitor the country’s borders and curb illegal immigration.

Sandra the orangutan granted limited human rights

A shy orangutan held in an Argentine zoo can be freed and transferred to a sanctuary after a court recognised the ape as a "non-human person" unlawfully deprived of its freedom, local media reported on Sunday.

Animal rights campaigners filed a habeas corpus petition - a document more typically used to challenge the legality of a person's detention or imprisonment - in November on behalf of Sandra, a 29-year-old Sumatran orangutan at the Buenos Aires zoo.

The case hinged on whether she should be treated as a "thing" or a "person".

In a landmark ruling that could pave the way for more lawsuits, the Association of Officials and Lawyers for Animal Rights (AFADA) argued the ape had sufficient cognitive functions and should not be treated as an object.

The court agreed Sandra, born into captivity in Germany before being transferred to Argentina two decades ago, deserved the basic rights of a "non-human person".

Kangaroo fights drone and wins

Drones may be 'on the rise' but their height is not great enough to out manoeuvre a savvy kangaroo.

The unmanned devices have come under under fire recently after a drone came within feet of a passenger jet near Heathrow and it seems one of Australia's most well-known creatures is similarly annoyed by their increasing presence.

One video from Australia shows all too well the problem these pesky unmanned aerial vehicles pose to kangaroos just looking for some peace and quiet in the outback.

Gateway to King Herod's palace unearthed by archaeologists

The entrance to King Herod's 2,000-year-old palace has been discovered in Israel.

Archaeologists have uncovered the colossal arched corridor leading to a magnificent entrance hall covered with frescoes during excavations at Herodium.

The main feature is a 20-metre-high royal corridor with a complex system of arches, which would have allowed the king and his entourage direct passage into the palace courtyard.

Talented hackers have caused "serious damage" after breaching a German steel mill and wrecking one of its blast furnaces.

The hack of the unnamed mill, detailed in the annual report of the German Federal Office of Information Security, was pulled off after a victim fell for a phishing email.

Lost luggage turns up after 20 years

TUCSON - We've all heard of nightmarish lost luggage tales, when bags go missing at the airport. Often times they turn up. But after 20 years what are the chances?

This week a Tucson woman received such a phone call.

Maria Dellos thought the call was in reference to luggage lost four months ago. Incredibly the bag found was filled with art supplies that vanished two decades ago!

Well done the roos!!  Buzzing animals at head height is cruelty.  Hope the drone got stamped on then watered and fertilised!

Magaluf to become 'mature resort', says government
Magaluf will have been transformed into a “mature tourist destination" by next summer, the Balearic government has declared

Popular for the last two decades with hedonistic young travellers, it was here last summer that an 18-year-old girl was filmed performing sex acts on a series of men, part of a craze known as “mamading”, where girls are encouraged to engage in lewd acts for free drinks.

Revolutionary lens restores complete vision to ageing eyes
New implant improves vision for older people struggling with cataracts, astigmatism, or long and short-sightedness.

The lenses are made of plastic and should never need to be replaced. Users have the added benefits that after cataracts are removed, they will never develop again.

Recent clinical trials of the implant showed that 81 per cent of participants reported 20/20 long-distance vision after surgery. 98 per cent said they never needed glasses for distance vision, 96 per cent for middle distance and 73 per cent for near distance.

The lenses cost around £3,900 per eye and are not yet funded by the NHS.

A judicial investigation has dismissed a Greek lawmaker's allegations that he was offered money to back the government candidate in the country's fraught presidential vote.

Court officials said Monday that prosecutor Panagiotis Panagiotopoulos said last week's claim by Pavlos Haikalis, a lawmaker from a small opposition right-wing party, was unfounded.

Sorry it turned out to be bad news after all.  The seal eventually named Dumbledore died of pneumonia last week in a seal sanctuary in Norfolk despite considerable efforts by staff.
