Britain braced for national heatwave emergency
Ministers drawing up unprecedented plan to manage soaring temperatures, as health warning issued indicating a 'danger to life'

Ministers are drawing up plans for the first-ever national heatwave emergency that would cause widespread disruption to schools, travel and health services.

Senior officials held a crisis Cobra meeting inside Downing Street on Monday, as forecasters predicted that the record for Britain's hottest day could be broken at the weekend – potentially smashing through the 104F (40C) barrier for the first time.

On Monday, the Met Office issued an amber weather warning for swathes of the UK, indicating a “danger to life” caused by the heatwave. Such a warning has only ever been issued twice before.

This rare Extreme Heat warning covers much of England and parts of Wales.

Exceptionally high temperatures are possible from Sunday, lasting into early next week.

Extreme weather warning extended to Tuesday

The Met Office has extended an extreme heat weather warning for England and Wales until Tuesday, with temperatures expected to build across the UK.

That means there could be a danger to life or potential serious illness from the scorching heat.

The amber alert will run from Saturday until Tuesday - temperatures are expected to peak on Monday, with highs of 36C (96.8F) forecast.

Parts of England are already in a hot spell with temperatures exceeding 30C.

Next week's amber warning covers most of England, going as far north as Darlington and to Plymouth in the south-west, and parts of Wales - although Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of Cornwall and the north are excluded.

The Met Office said there could be "widespread impacts on people and infrastructure", with the possibility that temperatures could lead to road closures as well as cancellations and delays to rail and air travel.

The forecasting agency said "substantial changes" in working practices and daily routines were likely to be required.

The latest warning comes after temperatures exceeded 30C in parts of the country on Tuesday.

Heatwave: Met Office issues red extreme heat warning

A red extreme heat warning has been issued by the Met Office for parts of England next week, meaning a risk to life is likely as temperatures could hit 40C (104F).

It points to there being a danger to life, with risk of illness not limited to vulnerable people.

This highest warning, covering London and parts of central England, warns of widespread impacts to people's lives.

The heatwave could cause disruption to travel and infrastructure.

The red warning, which is in place on Monday and Tuesday, covers London and the Midlands and goes as far north as Manchester and York.

It means substantial changes in working practices and daily routines will be required, the Met Office said

As well as the red warning an amber warning remains in place across most of England.

UK heatwave: Temperatures could hit mid-30s next week in ‘unusually dry’ August
But July’s record-breaking weather unlikely to be topped, forecasters say

Temperatures are set to soar into the 30s next week as another heatwave grips the UK.

Britain will see temperatures of up to 28C on Sunday before heatwave rolls over into next week amid an unusually dry August, forecasters said.

The Met Office urged people to avoid midday sun and stay in the shade as the arid weather looks set to last another seven to 10 days.

Highs of 27C and 28C are expected to hit parts of south and southeast England on Sunday, with sunny spells forecast throughout the day for most of the country.

UK weather: Level three heatwave alert issued for whole of England
The UK Health Security Agency alert will be in place from midday Tuesday to 6pm on Saturday August 13

All of England has been placed on a level three heat health alert, the UK Health Security Agency (HSA) has announced.

It follows forecasts of temperatures in the mid-30s later this week.

The alert will be in place from midday Tuesday to 6pm on Saturday August 13 for all regions of England.

With the latest heatwave coming after months of low rain, which have left the countryside and urban parks and gardens tinder-dry, households in some areas are being urged not to light fires or have barbecues.

Two water companies have already announced hosepipe bans and others have warned they may need to follow suit.

Following weeks of weather forecasters acting in their new social services role, informing us of anti cyclonic weather conditions, cold fronts, rising air pressure, cloud formations, and the need to keep hydrated, carry water bottles, sip frequently, and look out for the elderly....

I'm waiting with bated breath for similar advice and tips....
Consider wearing stout shoes, a macintosh, a hat, and make sure to carry an umbrella

Plus the inevitable antisocial media "why oh why isn't the government doing anything about the rain?!! why haven't they passed a new law?!!"

Perhaps we should add "buy a boat and lifebelt" to that?

UK weather: ‘Significant’ strong winds warned as temperature drop brings frost
‘It will certainly feel more like autumn,’ Met Office meteorologists warn

The UK is predicted to experience the first “significant” strong winds of the season with temperatures set to plummet.

Towards the end of the weekend and into next week, temperatures are forecasted to drop to single digits, the Met Office has said, warning that it will begin to feel “colder and windier”.

“It will certainly feel more like autumn in most places,” Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said.

UK braced for 50mph winds and torrential rain as temperatures plunge in Arctic chill

Heavy rain and high winds are headed for Britain later this week as an Arctic chill brings days of unseasonably cold weather.

Northerly winds have caused temperatures across the UK to plunge, with lows of 6C in many areas expected at night, several degrees below the early autumn average.

Met Office forecasters said the tail end of Hurricane Fiona, which made landfall in Canada last week, has also contributed to Britain’s cool start to the week.

Come Friday, commuters face a testing journey as heavy rain and high winds are expected to hit at morning and evening rush hours.

UK snow forecast: Polar blast to bring 'growing threat' of snow to Britain in just days

New maps show the areas set to be hit by snow in a matter of days, with one forecaster confirming the UK will see a glimpse of the white stuff before December hits. November 15 appears to be the date as to when the mercury starts to slump, with temperatures struggling to sit above freezing in Scotland and the far north of England. But the chill will cause more widespread snowfall over the preceeding days - with Monday, November 21 earmarked as the date when it'll push further south, according to an interactive weather model.

UK weather: Met Office warns of strong winds and icy temperatures
Yellow wind warning issued for parts of south-west England and south Wales, as cold snap raises risk of fog

The UK will face heavy winds, plunging temperatures, icy roads and rain on Monday, forecasters say.

An unseasonably warm autumn has so far helped buffer people from escalating energy costs, but sub-zero temperatures forecast for Monday could leave many confronting the scale of price rises for the first time.

It is expected to be as cold as -4C (24.8F) in parts of the country on Monday morning, with the north-east predicted to be the worst affected.

A yellow wind warning has been issued for parts of south-west England and south Wales from 6am to 6pm on Monday. Gusts of 55mph to 65mph are expected on land and 70mph to 80mph by the sea.

The Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said the colder weather would bring a risk of ice and fog, and driving conditions could be difficult.

UK weather: Britons warned power cuts possible as rain alert issued by Met Office
‘Short-term loss of power possible,’ Met Office tells parts of UK

The Met Office has warned heavy rain and winds could cause power cuts in areas of the UK as it issued a weather warning.

Forecasters said travel disruption could hit southwest England, southern Wales and parts of Northern Ireland on Thursday morning.

The yellow weather warning is in place across Cornwall and Devon, as well as parts of Wiltshire and Somerset. Cardiff and Swansea are also covered.

The alert - which runs between 3am and 8am - says a “short gust” of heavy rain and gusty winds may cause disruption.

This includes delays to road travel caused by surface water on the roads, as well as bus and train journeys taking longer than usual.

“Some short-term loss of power and other services is possible, with perhaps a few tree branches down too,” the Met Office adds.

UK weather: Britain bracing itself for snow as arctic winds trigger yellow warning
Northerly winds usually more common in February are likely to drop the mercury to minus eight degrees celsius next week

Britain was braced for snow as the Met Office warned that a blast of Arctic wind would send temperatures plunging as low as minus eight degrees celsius this week.

The northerly winds, which are usually more common in February and March, were set to bring with them icy blasts and snow flurries with a yellow warning for snow put in place for northern Scotland on Wednesday.

Alex Burkill, Met Office meteorologist, said:... “It’s going to turn even colder and feel even colder still with temperatures well below average for the time of year both by day and by night.

“Much of England, including the South West, we could see temperatures of minus 5C or minus 6C which is exceptionally cold."

Despite the warnings of frigid temperatures, with three weeks to go until Christmas, it looked like temperatures would return to normal by the time festivities get underway.
