Gmail does scan all emails, new Google terms clarify

Google has clarified its email scanning practices in a terms of service update, informing users that incoming and outgoing emails are analysed by automated software.

The revisions explicitly state that Google’s system scans the content of emails stored on Google’s servers as well as those being sent and received by any Google email account.

Google’s ads use information gleaned from a user’s email combined with data from their Google profile as a whole, including search results, map requests and YouTube views, to display what it considers are relevant ads in the hope that the user is more likely to click on them and generate more advertising revenue for Google.

An airline in the US has been forced to apologise after it responded to complaints on its official Twitter feed by posting an extremely graphic sexual image.

Yesterday it responded to one tweet from a young female user identified only as Alex, who said: “You ruined my spring break, I want some free stuff @USAirways H8 YOU”.

The airline replied: “We don’t like to hear this, Alex. Please provide feedback to our Customer Relations team here,” followed by a link to a pornographic image of a woman performing a sex act with a model Boeing 777.

Vodafone Greece said a survey of its customers found it had the best network experience in Greece. A survey by TNS ICAP of a representative sample of 16,380 users found that Vodafone customers say they have the best overall network experience. Vodafone said it has invested over EUR 600 million in the past five years to provide "mobile internet even in the basement, unsurpassed 4G speeds and call success rates of 100%". This is helped by the deployment of 900 MHz band spectrum for 3G services. The statement follows a press release from rival Cosmote claiming it has the fastest network in Greece.

Supermarket chains in Greece fear that the worst is yet to come for the sector, expecting the price war to escalate to such an extent in the next few months that some will be forced to shut down completely or be bought out cheaply by their competitors.

A long campaign to bring to justice the killers of a Sheffield teenager – who died on his first holiday alone – has taken a major step forward.

The heartbroken family of 17-year-old Matt Cryer have fought tirelessly for almost six years to see the case brought to trial, after Matt died outside a nightclub on the Greek holiday island of Zakynthos.

Now four men have finally appeared in court, charged under the Greek criminal code with exposure to harm – which can carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

Greek police wrongly claimed he had choked on his own vomit but a post mortem examination found he died of head injuries.

Thanks Maik - an interesting and varied news day.  Leaving aside the US Airlines story -     :flyer: - I wonder how the inspection of the tax inspectors will go.  They'll probably write a list of suspects which someone in the Ministry of Finance will then leave on the bus.
