Man attacked by fellow Britons in Zakynthos bar dies

A 35-year-old British man who was assaulted by two fellow Britons on the Greek holiday island of Zakynthos last week has died, local media reported on Thursday.

The unnamed man died at the capital's Attikon hospital, where he had to be airlifted after sustaining serious head injuriesy during a fight at a bar in the seaside party resort of Laganas.

The man had reportedly become involved in an altercation with two fellow Britons who were drinking at the same bar before the fight spilled out into the street.

Video footage from outside the bar showed the 35-year-old being launched upon and punched violently in the face by a heavyset, shirtless man, causing him to fall and hit his head on a sidewalk.

Police in Zakynthos have arrested the two men, identified only as being aged 22 and 25 years old, in connection with the assault.

The victim, a father of two, had been on the island with his family for a friend's wedding.

Think I read somewhere that it was believed to be a homophobic attack.

PM Tsipras lost in his hometown in EP Elections!

Greek PM Alexis Tsipras suffered a heavy defeat in Sunday’s European Parliament elections, as his party, SYRIZA ended up 9,5 behind conservative party New Democracy.

However, when your own hometown votes against you, it might be a sign that the right time for some introspection has come. Yes, that’s right, Alexis Tsipras’s party lost in the PM’s hometown of Athamanio on Arta, where SYRIZA got 208 votes against New Democracy’s 212.

Even more worrying for the PM is the fact that he frequently visits his village.

UK scientists create tiny shape-shifting 'surgeon' robots that can make cuts from within the human body

Tiny shape-shifting robots that can make precise cuts within the human body and one day replace surgeons are being developed by scientists in Edinburgh.

A team at Heriot-Watt University is starting a project to manufacture the robots, which will be as small as 1 millimetre in diameter, using shape memory alloy.

Thanks to this material, the robots will be able to change their shape in response to temperature, contracting to fit into tight spaces in the human body.

Professor Duncan Hand at Heriot-Watt University said that the project could dramatically change the way surgeons perform procedures.

Hoard of Viking coins seized during police raid could ‘change British history’

A haul of Viking coins worth £500,000 uncovered during a police raid could “change British history”, according to a leading historian.

Police seized the hoard of coins and a solid silver bar from properties in County Durham and Lancashire during an investigation.

The items, believed to be of major historical significance, include coins from the reign of Alfred the Great, King of Wessex, and his less well-known contemporary Ceolwulf II of Mercia.

King Alfred inflicted a major defeat on the Vikings in AD 878 and experts from the British Museum believe the coins belong to an undeclared hoard consistent with the location of the Viking army at that time.

The hoard is important because it fills a gap in the understanding of history at that time.

Until now, accounts have suggested Ceolwulf of Mercia was a puppet of the Vikings and a minor nobleman rather than a proper king.

However, the coins tell a different story and show two rulers standing side by side as allies.

Over half a million patients forced to swap GP surgeries after closures last year, investigation finds
‘Practice closures, because pressures mean they are no longer safe or sustainable to keep running, are incredibly serious – and heartbreaking for everyone involved,’ GP leaders say

More than half a million UK patients had to change their GP practice last year as a result of their surgery going under or merging with another practice to cope with rising workloads, an investigation has found.

At least 138 surgeries across the UK shut their doors in 2018, meaning up to 519,000 patients may have been displaced.

Barmy Boris is probably pleased but I'm really not sure that recommendation will encourage people to vote for Johnson, or have the opposite effect.
