A mini-fairground in Elliniko, southern Athens, where a 13-year-old boy was killed and his 9-year-old sister seriously injured on Sunday, did not have a license, the local authority said on Monday after three people were charged with manslaughter through neglect and grievous bodily harm.

The siblings had been in helium-filled cylinders, known as water rollers, on a pool in the playground in Elliniko when a strong gust of wind blew them about 30 meters. The boy died of head injuries while his sister was said to be in a stable condition last night.

A triple killer has won £800 in compensation after some of his belongings, including nose hair clippers, cranberry juice and an alarm clock, were lost or broken in prison.

Kevan Thakrar, 26, was awarded £500 because “priceless” photographs and personal items were lost - which a judge said was made worse because prison authorities did not apologise to him.

Thakrar, from Stevenage, Hertfordshire, is serving three life sentences with a minimum of 35 years behind bars after he and his brother Miran were jailed in 2007 for the gangland-style execution of three drug dealers and two other attempted murders.

The homecourt advantage was not much help to the Japanese men in their opening match at the World Team Table Tennis Championships.

Japan, ranked No. 3 in the world, were dealt a stunning 3-2 defeat by 16th-ranked Greece to start the group stage at Tokyo’s Yoyogi Gym on Monday night.
