Playing fast and loose with a much loved novel is not a crime in itself, but Louis de Bernières's surprise bestseller about an Italian-then Nazi-occupied Greek island during the Second World War was so much more than the picture-postcard love story depicted here. Director John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) and cinematographer John Toll (Braveheart) certainly fashion a sumptuous holiday brochure out of Cephalonia, but much of the credit for that must go to the island itself. Meanwhile, a sanitised version of the multilayered book (minus the homosexual subplot that actually makes dramatic sense of one strand of the story) plays out like a carnival of dodgy accents. Nicolas Cage's mandolin-plucking Italian is a cartoon, and the miscast Penélope Cruz plays doctor's daughter Pelagia as a sort of Spanish Greek. (Were no Greek actresses famous or beautiful enough?) Only John Hurt walks away with dignity intact.

For anyone who hasn't seen it, or can't get enough of it, it's repeated on Sky Atlantic at 23:15 tonight.

Foreign tourists’ average per capita spending in Greece remains at low levels, notwithstanding the signs of recovery observed so far this season.

Greece’s failure to catch up in terms of luxury tourism accommodation, major conference centers in major cities, cruise home ports, marinas and other areas are just some of the drawbacks which are holding the country back from attracting more affluent visitors.

In 2013 the average spending per trip of foreign visitors to Greece amounted to 604.2 euros, posting an annual decline of 1.9 percent, according to Bank of Greece data.

Those who spent the most during their visits to Greece were the Canadians (1,388 euros per trip), followed by the Australians (1,369 euros), Americans (1,218 euros), Russians (989 euros), Swiss (961 euros) and Austrians (898 euros).

A Greek police officer was arrested for allegedly being the head of an Internet-based prostitution ring in Athens.

A police investigation revealed that the 45-year old policeman was forcing his Russian wife and several Greek and foreign women into prostitution as well as running a website and Twitter account to make contact with possible clients.

More than 30 years have passed since the last Pony buggy hit the Greek streets, but a Thessaloniki company is preparing to relaunch the famous contraption.

NAMCO, run by the Kontogouri family, will launch a completely new model of the so-called “poor man’s Jeep”, famous during the 1960s and 70s. It will be redesigned from scratch to a high spec. The family aims to produce 24 new Pony per day at less than 7,000 euros per car.

As once described in the German press, Pony “is so ugly, it ends up being pretty”. It was one of the most successful Greek cars with 30,000 sold in 14 countries due to its low maintenance and operation costs. Between eight and 10 Pony cars were made per day, with 67 percent of their components made in Greece.

Athens:  A car bomb exploded outside a central bank building in Athens early on Thursday, smashing windows but causing no injuries, just hours before Greece was due to make its first foray into the international bond markets in four years.

The dawn blast, which police believe was carried out by leftist or anarchist guerrilla groups, also came a day before a planned visit to Athens by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

After four years of tax increases that have strained Greek households and businesses, the Finance Ministry is planning to introduce tax cuts from next year for salaried workers, pensioners and self-employed professionals but this will depend on authorities boosting tax collection rates, Kathimerini understands.
