Kef fire risk 31/10/22: Low

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8935 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0338 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1192 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9673 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:

Laws are left on the books

Greece is suffering both from an overabundance of legislation and a lack of enforcement of these laws, experts agree.

More worryingly, a law designed to monitor local government actions has been languishing for 12 years, when experts concur that local government can often be a hotbed of corruption.

Worker shortage hurts emergency response

First responders are warning they face a major worker shortage that is slowing emergency response times across the country.

The islands are also affected as emergency response crews are struggling to fully staff ambulances.

Hm, on the islands I'd have thought there would be people wanting to work all year, perhaps the problem is having the money to pay them?
:dunno:

MPs 'constantly' warned their phones are national security risk
Liz Truss hacking raises fears of 'insecure' communications at the heart of Government

MPs are being "constantly" warned their phones are a security risk, after it was claimed Liz Truss’s phone was hacked by Russia.

The attackers are said to have hacked the former prime minister’s phone for details of negotiations with international allies, whilst she was serving as foreign secretary.

Senior Tory MPs have told The Telegraph that MPs are “constantly” asked to be vigilant to the threat of hacking.

“Every phone, government or private, can be hacked easily,” they said. “Government phones have no extra protection and swapping numbers just means whoever wants to attack your phone has to find the new number and that will take what? 10 minutes? So there shouldn’t be any secret information on phones.”

According to The Mail on Sunday the Kremlin agents who hacked Ms Truss’s phone while she was foreign secretary are thought to have gained access to sensitive exchanges with foreign officials on Ukraine, as well as private conversations with Kwasi Kwarteng.

Mobiles are inherently insecure, which might be a surprise to British politicians

It is no longer news to point out that a mobile phone, if hacked, can be the ultimate tool for surveillance. But the question is whether it is a surprise to British politicians – and whether they are using their devices sensibly or carelessly.

Greta Thunberg says Cop27 a ‘scam’ that provides platform for ‘greenwashing, lying and cheating’

Greta Thunberg has described climate summits such as the Cop27 conference taking place in Egypt next week as a “scam” that is “failing” humanity and the planet by not leading to “major changes”.

The Swedish activist said people in positions of power were using the high-profile gatherings for attention and were “greenwashing, lying and cheating”.

So if I've got the right, neither King Charles nor Rishi Sunak are going (though Rishi is allegedly thinking it over) but Boris Johnson will be going. Should be in his element.

The UK terror survivors tracked down by ‘disaster trolls’

Conspiracy theorists, who claim UK terror attacks have been staged, are tracking down survivors to their homes and workplaces to see if they are lying about their injuries, a BBC investigation has found.

Martin Hibbert, who was paralysed from the waist down when he and his daughter Eve were caught in the 2017 Manchester Arena blast, told the BBC he is now preparing to bring libel action against a conspiracy theorist based in Wales.

Richard D Hall has described how he physically tracks down survivors of the attack - in which 22 people were killed and more than 100 injured - to determine whether it was faked. He says he spied on Eve from a vehicle parked outside her home.

In a video shared with his followers online, Mr Hall demonstrates setting up a camera to film Eve, now profoundly disabled and in a wheelchair, to see whether she can in fact walk.

"I'm all for freedom of speech," Martin Hibbert told me. "But it crosses the line when you're saying I'm an actor or I've not got a spinal cord injury or Eve's not disabled, she's not in a wheelchair.

"You don't know how far he's going to go to get answers."

Mr Hall suggests that those who were killed in the attack are really alive and living abroad. He also promotes theories that several other UK terror attacks were staged. A former engineer and website designer, he makes money from selling books and DVDs outlining his theories, as well as speaking at events and posting videos online. As recently as mid-October, he had more than 16 million views and 80,000 subscribers on YouTube.

Jeez, there are some seriously sick people around us.

Cruella Suella Braverman is looking to be on decidedly dodgy ground on two fronts:

Quote
Why the asylum seeker crisis is make or break for Braverman, and a nightmare for Sunak

Here are the important facts:

1) Suella Braverman rejected advice from home office officials to book hotel accommodation to cope with the surge in asylum seeker numbers illegally crossing the channel.

4) There are currently 4,000 asylum seekers sleeping on Manston's floors, compared to the official maximum of 1,500 to 1,800.

5) Under English law, not European human rights law, the maximum length of stay is supposed to be 24 hours. There are some asylum seekers at Manston who have been there for three weeks to four weeks.

6) There is an assumption that charities specialising in help for asylum seekers will sue the government for keeping asylum seekers at Manston longer than the maximum 24 hours.

As one Home Office source told me, this creates the horrific prospect for Mr Sunak's government that it will be forced to pay out maybe £5,000 or £6,000 each, not to those fleeing persecution in dangerous countries but - for example - to Albanian economic migrants, many of whom, the Union for Borders, Immigration and Customs say, are thought to be criminals.

Suella Braverman admits sending official documents six times to personal email
Ms Braverman apologised for the breach

Suella Braverman sent official documents to her personal email on six occasions as Home Secretary, she has admitted, as she published her version of events leading up to her resignation over a security breach.

In a letter to the Home Affairs Committee, Mrs Braverman disclosed that she transferred them to her personal email six times so she could read the documents while conducting virtual meetings and interviews on her Government phone on the move.

However, she maintained that none of the documents concerned national security, intelligence agency or cyber security matters and “did not pose any risk to national security”.

Giant rabbits ‘bred for meat’ looking for new homes after Northumberland rescue

Dozens of giant rabbits – one of which weighs as much as a jack russell terrier – are looking for new homes after being “bred for their meat” on an allotment.

The RSPCA rescued 42 Flemish giant rabbits in Ashington, Northumberland, which were found living in “dreadful conditions in cramped hutches, where they had been left to breed with each other”.

Of all the rabbits rescued, the largest weighed more than 8kg (17.6lb) and had ears seven inches long.
