Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8870 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0211 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1274 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9793 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Sweeping tax rises for everyone as Rishi Sunak prepares for ‘rough’ road ahead
Public warned it is ‘inevitable’ all will have to contribute more to plug £50bn black hole left by mini-Budget

Rishi Sunak is drawing up plans for years of tax rises for everyone in the country, as a Treasury source warned: “It’s going to be rough.”

On Monday, the Prime Minister and the Chancellor decided to bring in “stealth” increases in income tax and National Insurance over the coming years by freezing the thresholds at which people start to pay different rates.

They agreed that “tough decisions” would be needed on tax rises, given the “eye-watering size” of the £50 billion fiscal black hole left by Liz Truss’s disastrous mini-Budget.

Free firewood turns into hot commodity in Greece

Facing a winter of energy shortages, people across Greece are resorting to cheaper heating sources, such as firewood.

Responding to growing demand – which tends to push up prices – several local councils across the country have stepped in to distribute firewood free of charge to the needy.

In Greece’s mountainous regions, such programs have already been running for years. But in urban centers, this is a new initiative.

Dozens missing after migrant boat sinks off Andros in the Aegean

A large search-and-rescue operation was under way on Tuesday for dozens of asylum seekers whose boat went down in the Kafireas Strait between the Aegean islands of Andros and Evia in the early hours of the day.

According to an official coast guard announcement, the operation began after a distress signal was sent by passengers on the vessel to the 112 hot line. Nine people were rescued from a tiny islet, but the survivors reported there being at least 68 people on board the sailboat.

An unknown military ship passed close to Poros earlier today, looked very much like one of the nine Elli-class frigates of the Hellenic Navy. The number on the side, F 451, indicates it was the Limnos.

As a side note, F 451 is also an abbreviation for the dystopian novel by Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451.

Autumn to put in an appearance this weekend

After weeks of dry, sunny weather more reminiscent of late spring, autumn will be making an appearance this weekend, the national weather service (EMY) said in a bulletin on Tuesday.

According to EMY, clouds are expected to start gathering on Friday in northern and western parts of the country, bringing the first burst of showers and sporadic storms overnight..

Winds are also expected to pick up, starting in the Ionian Sea, and will be coming in from a northerly direction, bringing a chill that will push down temperatures to more seasonal levels, EMY added.

Matt Hancock suspended as Tory MP for joining I'm a Celeb cast

Former health secretary Matt Hancock has been suspended as a Conservative MP after joining the cast of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!

Tory party managers have taken a dim view of the West Suffolk MP's decision to take part in a reality TV show while Parliament is sitting.

The Tory chief whip said it was "serious enough" to warrant suspension.

Andy Drummond, deputy chairman of the West Suffolk Conservative Association, said he was looking forward to seeing Mr Hancock "eating a kangaroo's penis".

British man grows ‘world’s most dangerous plant’ with a sting like ‘electrified acid’

A British man has grown the ‘world’s most dangerous plant’ with a sting so bad it can lead to months of pain — and even suicide.

Daniel Emlyn-Jones, 49, decided to grow the gympie-gympie in his home where it sits in a cage marked with a ‘danger’ sign.

Gympie-gympie - also known as the ‘Australian stinging tree’ - is a nettle-like shrub known as the world’s most venomous plant.

It is said to be is capable of delivering a sting like ‘being burnt with hot acid and electrocuted at the same time’.

Gympie-gympie is a plant in the nettle family Urticaceae, native to rainforest areas of Australasia.

If touched for even a second, tiny hair-like needles will deliver a burning sensation that will intensify for the next 20 to 30 minutes.

The pain can then continue for weeks or even months leaving patients unable to even sleep from the agony. In some cases, the pain is so intense it can lead to suicide.

Ryanair Issues Warning To People With Flights Booked In November

Ryanair has issued a warning to anyone preparing to take a flight with them this November.

The airline charges passengers £55 to check in manually at the airport instead of online – but Ryanair’s website and app is set to go down in November.

The airline’s app and website will be down for 11 hours between November 8 at 6pm until Wednesday 9 at 5am.

Anyone with flights in this time bracket is being urged to check in earlier than usual or face having to check in at the airport they are travelling from and pay the £55 fee.
