Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8864 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0245 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1282 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9761 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Police vetting lets in wrong people too often - report

Hundreds of police officers who should have failed vetting checks may be in the job in England and Wales, a damning report has found... the review found officers passed despite having criminal records, being suspected of serious offences, having substantial debts or having family linked to organised crime.

Elgin Marbles replica creators want British Museum to return originals to Greece

It is hard to know how the deadlock over the demands of Greece for the return of the Elgin Marbles will end. But one solution might involve a set of replica statues carved not by ancient Greek craftsmen but, believe it or not, by a robot.

The idyllic village that was stolen by the Government
Almost 80 years ago, Tyneham’s 225 residents were forced to give up their little slice of coastal paradise. We have much to thank them for

The beach at Worbarrow Bay looks like it was airlifted from the Ionian. Millions of smooth white pebbles reflect the sun and give the sound of the gentle waves a hypnotic quality. Cliffs of dazzling limestone rise up from the shoreline towards the sky. The sea, if not the wine-dark version of Homer’s Odyssey, is certainly as inviting as anything you’ll find in the Med.

The only clues that you’re in Dorset, and not Kefalonia...

Reprieve for illegal edifices

The Environment Ministry is preparing another round, the fourth in 11 years, of legalization of structures either built without a permit or having significantly exceeded the allowed size.

It is estimated that 262,000 structures, mostly housing, fall under this category.

Not all such illegal structures will be legalized: To be eligible for this action, they must have been built before 2011 and must not on beaches or forestland.

Putin U-turns and rejoins deal allowing grain to leave Ukraine
Russian hardliners say embarrassing climbdown is proof the Kremlin had no viable method of blocking ships

Russia has rejoined a deal to get grain shipments out of Ukraine, in an embarrassing about-turn for Moscow after ships left Black Sea ports despite Russian threats.

Furious with a suspected Ukrainian drone attack that penetrated defences around Russia's prized Black Sea fleet in Crimea over the weekend, Moscow warned it could no longer guarantee safe passage for ships carrying Ukrainian grain from the Black Sea to the Bosphorus and walked out of the deal.

In an unusual reversal, Russia’s Defence Ministry on Wednesday announced that the deal was back on, saying it had received assurances from Kyiv that the vessels would not be used to launch attacks on Russia.

Fast-track to Britain: The route Albanians are taking – step by step
With 12,000 Albanians arriving in the UK this year, we look at the treacherous journey they face and the impact of the Modern Slavery Act

The Modern Slavery Act was introduced by Theresa May, then home secretary in 2015, as a way of protecting victims of people trafficking gangs, but it has since become the “biggest loophole” in the immigration system, according to ministers.

Young Albanian men have become particularly adept at playing the system to avoid being sent home when they illegally cross the Channel to arrive in the UK. Albanians now account for the single biggest nationality claiming to be victims of modern slavery.

By paying people-smuggling gangs to get them to Britain, up to two per cent of all Albanian men have either attempted the Channel crossing or are thinking of doing so.

Suella Braverman, the Home Secretary, controversially referred to the small boats crisis as an “invasion”, as MPs pointed out that the 12,000 Albanians who have arrived in the UK so far this year have not come from a war-torn country, but from one which is awaiting EU membership.

Revealed: Most Albanian asylum seekers granted UK visas are trafficked women
Exclusive: 86 per cent of people granted visas were women in genuine need of protection

The majority of Albanian asylum seekers granted leave to remain in the UK in the past year were trafficked women, according to data obtained by The Independent.

Analysis from the Oxford Migration Observatory reveals that 86 per cent of Albanians who received positive decisions on asylum applications in the year ending June 2022 were women, whose leave to remain was granted on the basis that they were likely to have been trafficked and in genuine need of protection.

The analysis also shows that more than half (55 per cent) of adult Albanian asylum applicants were successful at the initial decision stage. Acceptance rates for Albanian asylum claims to the year ending June 2022 were higher in both Ireland and Italy, with initial decision grant rates of 88 per cent and 59 per cent respectively, compared to 55 per cent in the UK.

Albania tells UK: do not blame us for your immigration problems

Albania’s prime minister accused Britain on Wednesday of using his country’s citizens as scapegoats for its failed immigration policies after derogatory comments by British ministers about a rise in the number of Albanian asylum-seekers.

Edi Rama said Britain was falsely targeting Albanians “as the cause of its crime and border problems” and attacked what he called the “insane” and “easy rhetoric.”

In a series of posts on Twitter, Rama said Britain’s “rhetoric of crime” ended up “punishing the innocent,” including businessmen and hardworking Albanians who paid British taxes.

Home Office leaves asylum seekers from Manston stranded in central London

The Home Office left asylum seekers from the Manston immigration centre in central London without accommodation or warm clothing, as officials attempted to reduce acute overcrowding, the Guardian can reveal.

A group of 11 asylum seekers from Manston were left at Victoria railway station on Tuesday evening with nowhere to stay, without winter coats, many of them in flip-flops, according to volunteers with the Under One Sky homelessness charity, who provided them with emergency supplies of food and clothes.

“They were stressed, disturbed and completely disoriented,” said Danial Abbas, a volunteer with the charity. The group, from Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, some of them wrapped in blankets to keep warm, were confused about what they were meant to do, he said. “They were also very hungry.”

About 50 asylum seekers from Kent were also deposited from a bus by Victoria coach station at around 11pm on Saturday, according to a witness. “They were still on the street at midnight, trying to work out what to do, where to go. They had no money, and hadn’t even been told where they were,” said the witness, an Afghan asylum seeker, who asked not to be named.

Liz Truss bonfire night effigy comes complete with laughing lettuce

The former prime minister Liz Truss with a laughing lettuce on her shoulder has been unveiled as the celebrity guy by the Edenbridge Bonfire Society.

The 11m-high effigy is clutching a cardboard box containing a leaver's card and a copy of the Guinness Book of Records in reference to her time as the shortest serving PM.

It also contains a copy of her mini-Budget, a Make Britain Great Again red cap, a T-shirt with the slogan "I am a fighter, not a quitter", and a cheque for £115,000 in reference to the perpetual funding provided to ex-prime ministers.

The lettuce on her shoulder, which is crying with laughter, is referring to a livestream of a lettuce run by the Daily Star, which suggested the vegetable would last longer than Truss did in office.

The Edenbridge guy has become a highlight of the bonfire season with previous public figures put up for ridicule including John Bercow, Boris Johnson, Harvey Weinstein, Donald Trump, Katie Hopkins, Russell Brand, Jonathan Ross, both of the Blairs, Katie Price, Wayne Rooney, Lance Armstrong, Anne Robinson, and Saddam Hussein.

The society, a not-for-profit organisation which aims to raise more than £5,000 for local charities, has been in existence for more than 90 years and has even featured on Pathe News clips dating back to the 1950s. Winston Churchill is one of several famous figures to have opened the Kent town's bonfire night celebrations.
