Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8985 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0046 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1130 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9954 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Less damage from wildfires this summer

Greece avoided disastrous wildfires this spring and summer, on the scale of those that devastated several locations in central and southern Greece in 2021, but still had to battle thousands of fires, data from the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Ministry show.

A total of 9,245 fires important enough to require the intervention of the Fire Service broke out between the beginning of the year and October 31, the official end of the fire emergency season. The number of incidents was slightly higher than the average of the past 15 years (8,958), but the total burned area – 23,838 hectares – was 52.4% lower than the 15-year average of 50,080 hectares. Burned forest areas, in particular, were 62% lower than the 15-year average.

Driver ‘seriously injured’ after being run over three times by own car

A woman in Switzerland was seriously injured after she got out of her car with the engine still on only for it to run her over three times, police said on Friday.

The 45-year-old had stepped out of her car in a residential area in St Gallen in northeastern Switzerland, probably in order to get something out of the boot, regional police said, according to the Swiss news agency ATS.

But then the car, which was on a slight slope, began rolling backwards.

The woman had attempted in vain to stop the vehicle, before falling to the ground and was run over a first time.

The car had then rammed into another vehicle and rebounded back in the opposite direction, running over the woman a second time, police said.

But the car then hit a sidewalk, sending it back towards the woman and running her over a third time, before finally hitting a wooden barrier and coming to a halt.

Russian oligarch and art collector creates Bond-style lair on Greek island
Dmitry Rybolovlev’s private island is being transformed into a resort patrolled by snipers—but will it be an "art island"?

Over the past few months, around 400 local construction workers have been tirelessly developing a resort on the private Greek island of Skorpios. Once inhabited by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the island is now the property of the Russian oligarch and art collector Dmitry Rybolovlev, who has been embroiled in one of the art world’s most bitter legal cases for the past seven years.

The workers arrive on Skorpios by boat from nearby Lefkada, their phones confiscated so they cannot photograph anything. Around-the-clock surveillance from security cameras and snipers prevent intruders from crossing. A single cruise ship is permitted to dock at a small public beach, but only when the Rybolovlev family is not there.

Plans to transform the island into a luxury resort were first announced in 2019, when it was revealed that Rybolovlev’s company Mykinai SA would build a small beach hotel of 12 rooms and nine properties across the island. There are also plans for a helicopter landing pad, a marina for super-yachts, a football pitch (Rybolovlev owns AS Monaco), stables and a riding ring for 30 horses, tennis courts, restaurants and spa facilities. Once the resort is open in 2024, no more than 50 guests at a time will be expected to pay $1m each a week.

Yet the reality is more James Bond than Four Seasons. Accessible only by boat or helicopter, the remote island is almost medieval in its scale as a fortress. There is a drawbridge connecting the nearest public island of Lefkada to Preveza, home of the only nearby airport.

Cobra dies after being bitten by boy in India: ‘I bit it hard twice’

A cobra died after an eight-year-old bit the reptile to protect himself when the reptile wrapped itself around his hand, according to a report.

The boy, identified by only his first name Deepak, was playing in the backyard of his house on Monday in Jashpur district, in India’s central Chhattisgarh state, when a snake attacked him.

The cobra bit the boy and wrapped itself around his hand, said a report by The New Indian Express newspaper.

The boy said he bit the snake “hard twice” as he was in great pain.

According to snake experts, the boy appeared to suffer a dry snake bite, which occurs when a snake doesn’t release any venom with its bite.

India is home to 300 species of snakes, including 60 highly venomous snakes. According to a 2020 report by nonprofit scientific journal eLife, India recorded 1.2 million snake bite deaths from 2000-19.

Airbnb has ruined my village
The San Francisco-based platform is not a holiday company but an extraction industry, critics claim, mining the beauty of UK honeypots

One consequence of out-of-control holiday lets is the disappearance of basic services – such as garages, post offices and grocers – because staff are unavailable, out-of-season demand is negligible and holidaymakers bring food or have it delivered.

There are nearly one million homes in England with no full-time residents – 653,000 vacant homes, 253,000 second homes, plus 70,000 properties recently flipped to business rates as commercial holiday lets to avoid local council tax.

No one knows exactly how many properties fall inside the unregulated “whole-home” Airbnb market, but pressure group Action on Empty Homes says “at least 150,000 homes have been sucked out of residential use with the true total believed to be far higher.”

Skip the mutiny, let the celebrations begin - micro Bounty bars won't vanish from choccie tubs - well, not until they're eaten, anyway.

Instead, a limited number of “No Bounty” Celebration tubs will be available at a limited number of Tesco pop-up stores, and unless you happen to be in Cradley Heath on 11 November, Pontypridd Tesco Extra on the 22nd, or 38 other one-day-only destinations, Bounty bars will still be in your Celebrations tub this season – like it or not.

Ministers, ex-PM targeted in Greece wiretap scandal

A FORMER PRIME minister and more than 30 politicians, journalists and businessmen were targeted by state surveillance in Greece in a scandal that has squeezed the conservative government, according to a report.

Weekly title Documento reported the list of targets included former premier Antonis Samaras, current members of the cabinet and shipping magnate Vangelis Marinakis, owner of Olympiakos and Nottingham Forest football clubs.

Yesterday, a European Parliament committee investigating wiretaps in Greece and other EU states called for a deeper investigation of the case.

A Greek parliamentary committee set up to investigate the scandal folded after a month, and critics said it failed to summon key witnesses.

Illegal software known as Predator was used in collaboration with technology employed by Greece’s state intelligence agency EYP, the Documento newspaper, which has a leftist viewpoint, added.

Influential members of the conservative New Democracy party, potential rivals in any future leadership challenge to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, were among those targeted, the newspaper said.
