Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.9011 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0724 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1098 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9325 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Parliament approves reimbursement of electricity suppliers’ excess profits

An amendment which temporarily establishes the reimbursement of part of the electricity suppliers’ excess profits was approved in Parliament on Wednesday.

Environment & Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas said “we envisage the extension of this mechanism for taxing surplus profits in the supply sector too,” adding that Greece has created a mechanism for taxing surplus profits in the production sector, which has so far yielded about 2.5 billion euros, which have been returned to electricity bills.

Meteorite that landed in Cotswolds may solve mystery of Earth’s water

Water covers three-quarters of the Earth’s surface and was crucial for the emergence of life, but its origins have remained a subject of active debate among scientists.

Now, a 4.6bn-year-old rock that crashed on to a driveway in Gloucestershire last year has provided some of the most compelling evidence to date that water arrived on Earth from asteroids in the outer solar system.

‘Struggle for democracy is constant,’ president says at Athens Polytechnic memorial

The 1973 Athens Polytechnic student uprising marked the “beginning of the end” of the seven-year military dictatorship that ruled Greece with an iron fist from 1967 to 1974 and was a “foundation stone” in the Metapolitefsi, the process of restoring democracy, Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou said on the anniversary of the revolt on Thursday.

Laying a wreath at a memorial to the victims of the regime’s violent crackdown on the uprising at the historic downtown Athens campus, Sakellaropoulou said the anniversary serves as a “reminder that the struggle for democracy is constant and taxing.”

Electric car drivers to pay road tax from April 2025

Electric cars will no longer be exempt from vehicle excise duty from April 2025, the chancellor has said.

Announcing the change as part of his Autumn Statement, Jeremy Hunt said the move was designed to make the motoring tax system "fairer".

The RAC motoring group said it does not expect the change to dampen demand for electric cars.

But others, including the AA, warned the move would reduce the incentive to switch to electric vehicles (EVs).

Royal Mail asks to stop Saturday letter deliveries

Royal Mail has asked the government if it can stop its letter deliveries on Saturdays, as it seeks to turn its fortunes around after slumping to a loss in the first half of the year.

The business said it wanted to move from a six-days-a-week letter delivery to five, from Monday to Friday only.

However, parcel services would continue to run all days of the week.

What is the minimum wage and how much is it?

The National Living Wage will increase from £9.50 to £10.42 an hour in April.

That is the UK's legal minimum wage for workers aged 23 or over. There are lower rates for younger workers.
