Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8968 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0677 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1151 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9366 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Football’s Real Home Was in Ancient Greece, Ancient Artifact Reveals

A relief exhibited at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece shows an ancient  Greek youth practicing by balancing a football on his thigh in front of a small boy. This means that football, albeit in a primitive form, is at least 2,400 years old and very likely has its origins in ancient Greece.

Crete earthquake: Tsunami fears as thousands told to move to higher ground
An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale has struck off the coast of Greece, leading one monitoring organisation to warn people in coastal areas to move to higher ground

People living in coastal areas have been advised to move to safety after an earthquake struck off the coast of Crete.

A quake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale hit 60km (37 miles) to the northeast of Siteía in Greece at around 1.25am local time on Monday, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

It occurred at a depth of of 80 kilometres, the independent monitoring organisation said.

A warning message tweeted by the EMSC advised those next to the sea to "move away from the coast and reach a higher place".

No such message has yet been broadcast by Greek authorities.

The earthquake is reported to have been felt as far away as north Africa. No injuries or damage to buildings has been reported in any of the areas affected.

Former culture secretary Ben Bradshaw joins campaign to return Elgin Marbles to Greece
A YouGov poll, showing widespread cross-party support for the disputed artefacts’ return, will increase pressure on the Government, which is currently resistant to a permanent handover

Former culture secretary Ben Bradshaw has teamed up with a Greek campaign to return the Elgin Marbles, saying their rightful home is at the Acropolis Museum in Athens.

Mr Bradshaw joins figures including Lord Vaizey and Stephen Fry who are calling for the Parthenon Sculptures, held by the British Museum, to be returned to Athens.

Kef fire service prevented from rescuing a cat in Argostoli earlier today by an illegally parked 4x4. Police tow truck cleared the obstruction but could have been a serious situation if the call out had been to a fire. No further mention of the cat but I gather it was rescued.

Food prices consistently higher than EU

The turbulence in energy prices and other commodities like cereals and grains brought on by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine may have exacerbated the inflationary crisis for almost 12 months now, but for many years in Greece, the cost of food and other necessities has not been in line with the purchasing power of the country’s citizens.

Despite the recession-induced fall in consumption, this discrepancy remained even during the 10-year financial crisis, with the so-called internal devaluation only having an impact on wages, pensions and incomes in general, but not prices.

Another house burgled in Argostoli and, as with previous intrusions, it appears the thief knew where the valuables were kept.

Short-term rental categories

The government, local authorities and tourism businesses are trying to strike a balance between regulating the largely unregulated short-term rental market and maintaining tourism’s growth momentum.

Short-term rentals are now an integral part of the local tourism product.

Rhodes: Carer confesses to killing elderly people in her care

A 45-year-old carer on Rhodes who called police on Monday morning to say she had smothered a 75-year-old woman she was looking after has confessed to other killings of elderly people.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the body of the woman and arrested the carer.

The carer later told police that she had tried to kill her child when he was a toddler.
