Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8851 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0725 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1298 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9324 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Fireplaces, wood stoves as lethal as cars
The main sources of air pollution in urban centers in Greece are vehicle traffic and heating

Smoke from fireplaces and wood stoves and pollutants from vehicles are responsible for around 10,000 premature deaths a year in Greece, according to new data on the impact of air pollution on the health of Greeks included in the European Environment Agency’s annual report published Wednesday.

“In winter, the most important source is heating, especially biomass burning (fireplaces and stoves),” said Nikos Mihalopoulos, director of the National Observatory of Athens’ Institute of Environmental Research.

This problem, he notes, is not confined to the Greek capital. “In some cities in the periphery it is much worse. For example, in Ioannina it is up to three times higher. It’s not just a matter of population, it also depends on the climate of the region, the atmospheric conditions, the topography, the penetration of natural gas in a city,” he added.

Nurses to strike for two days before Christmas

Nurses in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are to strike for two days next month in what is set to be their biggest walkout in the NHS's history.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) announced strikes on 15 and 20 December in its pay dispute with the government.

Nurses will still provide emergency care, but routine services will be hit.

Potential 'final' forestry map of Greece can be found at https://gis.ktimanet.gr/gis/forestfinal

Find Kef and zoom in, areas shaded grey are pending decision due to errors / objections / omissions, any areas shaded faint yellow are not subject to forestry legislation while areas that are subject to forestry legislation are shaded green. As most of Kef appears to be.

Rental Companies In Greece Are Running Out Of Cars!

Thousands of businesses from the car rental industry are at risk of being left without cars as the delays in the delivery of new vehicles still has not happened and big leasing groups no longer hold auctions of used cars!

The reason is none other than the problems that still exist in the deliveries of new vehicles which cause a domino of developments throughout the car market.

Initially the rental companies were given a life extension of their older fleet of vehicles, due to both the coronavirus and the problems recorded in deliveries. Now the age limit for the vehicles is 14 years from the previous 12 years.

However, the age of the older vehicles has reached the 14-year mark, at which point they must be withdrawn from circulation as commercial rental company vehicles and replaced by new or newer second-hand vehicles.

But both new and newer used ones are literally hard to find on the Greek market for two reasons.

Police casts wider net in Ark of the World investigation

Following raids earlier this week on the Ark of the World headquarters in Athens’ Kolonos district and on a branch in Chios, in the eastern Aegean, the Hellenic Police (ELAS) expanded its search on Friday to the charity’s Kalamata shelter in the southwestern Peloponnese.

ELAS’ financial crimes squad is casting a wide net in its probe of the financial records of the charity, which is also being investigated for allegations of child abuse and exploitation.

For the third year in a row, America surpasses a grim total of 600 mass shootings

A day without a mass shooting in America is now far rarer than a day with one.

On Wednesday, the country woke once again to familiar news.

Just days after five people were shot and killed at a LGBTQ+ nightclub in Colorado, an employee had opened fire at a Walmart supermarket in Virginia killing six people, before taking his own life.

It was, according to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), America's 607th mass shooting this year.

Since then there have been three more and the total now stands at 610. That figure will inevitably rise.

‘Potentially hazardous substance’ found on dead body in Wigan
Location cordoned off with residents unable to leave homes as police work to identify person involved

Substances described as “potentially hazardous” were believed to be on the body of a person found dead in Wigan, police have said.

Officers were called to Kilburn Drive, Shevington, a quiet, residential village in Wigan, on Thursday evening following reports of a dead body at the scene. This was confirmed shortly after emergency services had arrived.

Greater Manchester police said they “believe there are potentially hazardous substances on the body and anyone who has had direct contact with the body should speak to officers or seek medical advice immediately”.

Police are trying to identify the body and inquiries are under way. They said it was still too early to confirm whether the body was male or female.

The location was cordoned off on Friday afternoon. Residents in the cordon reported not being able to leave their homes.

Wildcats could be released in England for first time in hundreds of years

Wildcats could be released in England for the first time in hundreds of years as the Wildlife Trusts recruit an expert to help introduce them back into the wild.

After being hunted to extinction, the European wildcat is now the UK’s rarest native mammal. They are larger than the domestic cat, which are bred from the wildcats of Africa. It has not been spotted in southern England since the 16th century, but now it looks possible that the animal will be found stalking the landscape once more.

A British man is being deported from Denmark because he did not know he had to apply to stay in the country after Brexit.

Will Hill, 37, was ordered to leave by Sunday. His application to stay, made three weeks late, had been rejected, as was an appeal to the immigration authorities.

Colosseum’s drains reveal sausage dogs slaughtered in bloody bear fight bouts
Archaeologists say the dogs may have performed acrobatic tricks, taken part in staged hunts or been pitted against bears

Sausage dogs were used for entertainment in the Colosseum and may have been pitted against bigger animals in bloody fights watched by ancient Roman spectators, archaeologists have revealed in a new discovery.

Archaeologists excavating the ancient drains that lie beneath the 2,000-year-old amphitheatre in Rome found, for the first time, the remains of small dogs which were similar to the modern day dachshund.

The dogs would have been either used as part of staged battles on the blood-soaked floor of the arena or trained to perform acrobatics, just like dogs in modern-day circuses, experts said.

They were the ancestors of sausage dogs rather than true dachshunds – the breed did not evolve as we now know it until the 18th century.
