Being a traditionally maritime country, Greece acknowledges the great potential and opportunity that marine and maritime activities hold for the EU economy as a whole, on the condition of sustainability.

In this context, and in view of the upcoming Commission Communication, the Presidency will hold a High-Level Conference on the subject on 14 March 2014. Topics will include coastal tourism, cruise tourism, yachting, coastal management, marine clusters, cooperation between the public and private sector.

Wonder if the subject of scaring away visiting boats by whacking up the charges will come up?

Tourism in Greece bounced back last year after dismal 2012 figures, according to recently released data from the country’s main airports covering the January-December 2013 period.

Athens International Airport saw a 2.51 percent annual increase of international arrivals in 2013.

Figures from other main Greek airports showed that arrivals to Crete soared and the island welcomed more tourists (3.33 million) than any other Greek destination. During the January-December 2013 period, arrivals were up by 19.84 percent in Chania and 17.15 percent in Heraklion.

Kalamata Airport had the highest passenger growth increase last year at 61.25 percent compared to 2012. Mykonos and Santorini followed with arrival increases reaching 26.69 percent and 22.05 percent respectively.

Arrivals were also on the up in Kefalonia (17.53 percent), Kos (15.37 percent), Zakynthos (15.22 percent) and Rhodes (10.92 percent).
