Kef fire risk 15/06/22: Low

Thirty nine new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, none on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8918 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0766 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1213 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9289 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Landlords forced to allow tenants to have pets

Tenants will soon have a legal right to keep pets in rented homes, forcing landlords to house four-legged companions in their rental properties.

Government proposals expected to be announced tomorrow will bring an end to buy-to-let investors placing blanket bans on pets in their lets.

The new rules will be included in the Renters Reform Bill white paper due to be published this week, which will also abolish so-called “no fault” Section 21 evictions.

Allegedly the grandfather of the young man struck in the face with broken glass last weekend is offering a 5,000 euro reward for information leading to identification of his attackers.

The tiny electric car that’ll take you to the office and back ... for £20 a month

Between rail strikes and record fuel prices, getting to the office has become one of the most onerous parts of the work day.

Electric cars are cheaper to run, but still carry a hefty upfront price tag, which grew this week as the Government scrapped its £1,500 grants.

For those who don’t fancy braving the elements on their bike, the new Citroen Ami will take you as far as the office and back on a single charge for the price of a mobile phone contract. It just won’t get you there very fast.

Technically a quadricycle rather than a car, because of its tiny 6kW motor and maximum speed of 28mph, the Ami is now available in the UK for just £19.99 a month to lease, with an upfront deposit of £2,369.

As used by Greek police:

Greece recruits world’s slowest electric police cars

Meet the police car you can almost outrun in a school zone, now on duty on the small Greek island of Chalki.

While the Ami might only be capable of 45km/h – and 70km of electric range from a 5.5kWh battery – it shouldn't pose a problem on the Greek island, as the longest drivable distance between two points (according to Google Maps) is just 10.1km.

British woman raped in Crete says her father ‘100% did not do it’ after police charge him
‘He’s the best dad in the world,’ the woman said as she accused local police of going after the wrong man

A British woman raped on holiday in Crete has criticised local police after they charged her father with the attack.

The 33-year-old accused authorities of allowing her rapist to “roam free” after her father appeared in court in the capital Heraklion on Tuesday. He reportedly pleaded not guity to charges of rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence after he was arrested on Saturday.

Police claim the man made lewd gestures towards his daughter in a bar last week and hit her before raping her on a beach.

But the victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, says her father was in their hotel at the time and she is “100 per cent convinced” CCTV evidence and DNA will prove his innocence.

Greece Among Tops in Europe in “Healthy Life Years”

Greece ranks in the top third in number of “healthy life years” among European Union member states, according to a new study, a notable feat despite a population with one of the highest smoking and obesity rates on the continent.

Greek men ranked sixth in the EU with 65 healthy life years at birth, while Greek women were seventh with 66.8 years, according to the EUROSTAT report released this week. ΕUROSTAT is the statistical arm of the 27-member European Union.

Tory candidate in Wakefield by-election said Brexit ‘built on lies’ and regretted voting for it
Nadeem Ahmed also warned leaving EU had triggered racist attacks and backed second referendum, in embarrassment for Boris Johnson

The Conservative candidate in a make-or-break by-election said the Brexit campaign was “built on lies” and that he regretted voting for it.

Nadeem Ahmed, who is fighting to cling on to the Wakefield seat for Boris Johnson, also warned leaving the EU had triggered an increase in racist attacks and backed a second referendum.

“I voted to leave and I regret the decision. All my friends who voted similarly are the same,” the then-leader of Wakefield Council told a newspaper, shortly after the referendum in 2016.

“The term immigrant is even something that needs addressing. There are around a million Brits living in Spain, we call them expats. There is a negative connotation to the word immigrant now.”

Boris Johnson's ethics adviser Geidt resigns

Boris Johnson's ethics adviser Lord Geidt has resigned after saying there was a "legitimate question" over whether the PM had broken ministerial rules over Partygate.

He said he was leaving the role, which he took up in April last year, "with regret".

He did not give a reason for his departure but in a statement he said it was the "right thing" to do.

It comes a day after he spoke of "frustrations" with the PM's actions.

Manhunt for ‘British Escobar’ after Greek police seize £12m of cocaine in banana shipment

Police have now launched a manhunt for a fifth person wanted in connection with the seizure who is believed to be a drug kingpin who has been dubbed the “British Escobar.”

The suspects from London and Liverpool, aged 38, 45, 48, and 52, allegedly smuggled the huge 660lbs haul in a banana shipment from Colombia to the port city of Thessaloniki, intended for distribution across Europe and Australia.

One of the men in the alleged ring is the brother of a major British drugs baron known as a “modern Pablo Escobar”, 41, who is said to be responsible for 10 per cent of the global cocaine trade while two of those arrested are reportedly “leaders of an international drug trafficking ring.”
