Seventy two new cases of coronavirus confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, three on Ithaka.

Today's bank rate:
1 GBP = € 1.1631
1 USD = € 0.8565

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the Post Office (https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-money).
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Greece plans more patrols after suspected wolf attack

Officials in Greece are stepping up patrols and launching a public information campaign following a suspected wolf attack on a dog at a popular mountain refuge near Athens.

The measures were agreed at a meeting late Monday between environment ministry officials and Greek wildlife group Callisto, a ministry document seen by AFP said.

They acted following an incident last Thursday when what appeared to be a wolf attacked a family outside the Bafi refuge on Mount Parnitha, some 36 kilometres (22 miles north of the capital).

Radio producer Nikos Nikolakopoulos told Mega TV that a “black wolf” had grabbed the family’s four-month-old puppy by the throat as they walked in the car park of the refuge, before carrying it off into the forest.

The Callisto wildlife group says some two dozen wolves are believed to live in the Parnitha national park.

The wolf population in Greece is estimated at between 700 and 1,000, situated in most of the Greek mainland. They are considered a protected species in the country.

Three hundred and eighty four active cases of coronavirus on Kefalonia, nine of the eleven beds on the Covid-19 unit at Argostoli Hospital are occupied.

Is there a back-story to these figures?
Vaccine/Boosters not available, Vaccine/Boosters not being taken up, Distancing rules being disregarded, etc

In an effort to stop the global spread, Greece has just donated 907,000 coronavirus vaccines to Nigeria, so I wouldn't think there's a shortage in Greece.

Nationally, of recent deaths 95% either had an underlying illness or were aged seventy or over, or both. Of those intubated (i.e. on a ventilator) almost 94% either hadn't been vaccinated or were only partially vaccinated. In comparison, only 16% had been fully vaccinated. Again, that's nationally. Figures I've seen suggest slow vaccination rates on Kef, e.g. around thirty vaccinations per day. But I haven't seen the full figures.

During the period Monday-Tuesday this week police on Kefalonia fined two people for not weaing a mask where one was required. The statutory fine is 300€. During the two days prior to that, Saturday and Sunday, two people had been fined the same amount for the same offence. During the two days prior to that, Thursday and Friday, two people had been fined the same amount for the same offence. On Monday, 03/01/22 and Tuesday, 04/01/22, five people on Kef had been fined for not wearing a mask.

In full: Boris Johnson's apology for Downing Street party which he thought was 'work event'

Boris Johnson has admitted he attended a Covid lockdown-breaking party in his garden in 10 Downing Street, but claimed to MPs he believed he was at a work event.

Mr Johnson told MPs that he was only in the garden for 25 minutes to thank assembled staff before resuming work in his office.

But an email, leaked to ITV News - showed 100 staff were invited to attend "socially distanced drinks" in the Number 10 garden to "make the most of the lovely weather" - suggesting it was not intended to be a work meeting.

“All I ask is that Sue Gray be allowed to complete her inquiry into that day and several others so that the full facts can be established."

How many times has BoJo been asked if he attended a party in the garden at No. 10? As Ted Hastings might say, “Jesus, Mary and Joseph and the wee donkey, can we just move this thing along before it drives us all round the bloody bend?” BoJo couldn't answer even though everyone else, their dog and its fleas all knew the answer was yes.

If BoJo thought that was a works meeting I have to wonder just how f**king hard he works. The man who runs the country can't recognise a piss up in his own back garden. Or control what happens there. Pathetic.

Greek sailing coach in rape trial over MeToo revelations

A Greek sailing coach has gone on trial in Athens accused of raping an 11-year-old girl, in a case that came to light when a gold medal-winning athlete spoke out about sexual abuse in sport.

Coach Triantafyllos Apostolou appeared in court on Wednesday, almost 12 years after the alleged rape took place.

The victim and her family were also in court, along with former Olympic sailing champion Sofia Bekatorou.

Bekatorou's decision to highlight sexual abuse led to a MeToo campaign.

Resistance to vaccination mainly political, survey shows

Four in five Greeks have been inoculated against the coronavirus or have booked a vaccination appointment, according to a public survey published Wednesday, which also found that resistance to vaccination is mainly political.

According to the poll, 65 percent of vaccine deniers said they refuse to get the shot because they feel that they are being forced to do so. Fifty-seven percent said the vaccine is still in an experimental phase, while 43 percent said they are concerned over the long-term side effects. Twenty-one percent said the pandemic is “fabricated".
