NHS hospitals hit by crippling rate hikes as private hospitals save millions in 'charitable' tax breaks

More than a quarter of private hospitals are registered as charities, letting them claim 80% discounts on business rates

But this comes as cash-strapped NHS hospitals are being hit with a £1.83bn rates bill over the next five years.

Half of the patrol cars are non operational

The General Secretary of the Greek Police force, Stavros Mavroeidakos said that... images such as the one that came to light showing a police car with plastic bags covering the passenger’s window were a common occurrence.

SYRIZA backs decision by Greece to abstain from conference that condemns communist crimes

Greece the only EU state to not attend conference

Greek minister Stavros Kontonis turned down the invitation and claimed, in a written statement, that the conference lacks "specific content and (its) title sends a wrong and dangerous political message ... (it) revives a Cold War climate, which brought so much suffering to Europe, runs contrary to the values of the EU and certainly does not reflect the view of the Greek government and Greek people, namely, that Nazism and Communism can never exist as the two parts of the same equation."

The popular Foxit Reader (Adobe Reader alternative) has a couple of un-fixed security vulnerabilities, story here.

If you use Foxit and find it's become a bit bloated and naggy, Sumatra .pdf Reader has a good reputation for being light weight and quick to open, review and download link here.

Matt Dawson: I had to have heart surgery after a tick bite

When former England rugby player Matt Dawson was bitten by a tick in a London park early last year, it caused a bacterial infection to spread through his body.

"I had two days where I felt awful. Very feverish, on the sofa, crashed out," he said.

Eventually he went to hospital where he was diagnosed with Lyme disease:

"It was a really scary time for me and my family. Such a tiny creature caused me to end up needing heart surgery."

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection, passed on to humans by infected ticks.

Carabao Cup reaches new low as third round draw to take place at 4.15AM in Beijing
Incredibly, the third round draw for this season's League Cup will take place when fans in England will all be in bed

Remember when the League Cup was considered a major, serious trophy?

We ask because, after more than 50 years as one of English football's three most important bits of silverware, the newly named Carabao Cup is lurching from shambles to another.
