DIY chains including B&Q and Wickes ‘promoting poisons that cause huge suffering and kill owls’

Some of Britain’s biggest DIY chains and garden centres including B&Q, Homebase and Wickes are promoting pest poisons that cause “immense and prolonged” suffering in preference to non-lethal deterrents, according to investigators from a leading charity.

The chemicals, aimed at getting rid of mice and rats, also kill wildlife such as birds of prey including owls, and pose a risk to humans and pets, Humane Society International (HSI) claimed.

Research by a secret shopper who visited 30 stores asking how to deter mice and rats was advised in 27 of them to use killer poisons — mostly anticoagulants, a type described by the Health and Safety Executive as “markedly inhumane”.

The bumpy road to ‘Freedom’

The road to “Freedom” – as the Greek government has dubbed its coronavirus vaccination drive – promises to be a bumpy one. We have already learned that Greece will receive a much smaller number of jabs in January than originally anticipated. The bad news conveyed by the government spokesman – that we’ll be getting 300,000 instead of 1 million vaccines next month – is starting to make us realize that getting as much of the population inoculated as necessary will be anything but easy.

Not particularly interested in French snail farmers, just found it a mildly amusing title.

Hopes for most endangered turtle after discovery of female in Vietnam lake

The last known male giant Swinhoe’s softshell turtle is no longer alone on the planet after the discovery of a female of his species in Vietnam.

The only known male Swinhoe’s softshell turtle is at Suzhou zoo in China. Scientists aim to ensure that the turtles are given the chance to breed and save the species from the brink of extinction.

The animal, known also as the Hoan Kiem turtle or Yangtze giant softshell turtle, has been driven to the brink by hunting for its meat and eggs, as well as by destruction of its habitat.
