Forty eight new cases of coronavirus confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, five on Ithaka.

Today's bank rate:
1 GBP = € 1.1646
1 USD = € 0.8699

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Police solving lowest proportion of crimes ever, even as number of sex offences soars
Just six per cent of all crimes resulted in a charge in the year to September 2021, Home Office figures reveal

Police are solving the lowest proportion of crimes on record as sex offences hit a new high, official figures show.

Just six per cent of all crimes resulted in a charge in the year to September 2021, equivalent to only one in 17 offences being solved, according to Home Office figures published on Thursday.

That represents a fall from 7.3 per cent in the previous year and is just half the charging rate of 15.5 per cent six years ago, when records began.

At the same time, the number of sex offences in a single year has risen to 170,973, the highest on record.

It represents an increase of 12 per cent on 2020 and is attributed to more victims coming forward after high-profile crimes such as the murder and rape of Sarah Everard.

Dozens who attended Downing Street parties can pay fines instead of being interviewed by police
But key figures including Boris Johnson and those accused of having organised allegedly illegal gatherings could be interviewed

Attendees at Downing Street parties will receive letters from the police offering them the chance to pay a fine rather than be interviewed by officers, it has emerged.

Dozens of people, who police can prove were at the gatherings, are expected to be contacted in the coming weeks to be informed they are being issued with fixed penalty notices.

They are unlikely to be interviewed by detectives over the matter because the infringements are regarded as minor.

In most cases, it will not be made public knowledge that someone has been given a fixed penalty notice, whereas court proceedings and convictions are public.

Must be me but it doesn't sound like a very thorough investigation  :dunno:

Thousands of fish die from thermal shock as cold sweeps Greece

Hundreds of thousands of farmed fish have died from cold in a lagoon in northwestern Greece after a heavy snowstorm crippled the country this week.

The dead fish, seabream and white seabream, began to emerge on the surface of the Richo Lagoon of Drepano Lake early on Tuesday after temperatures in the water dropped to as low as zero degrees Celsius.

Tiny UK island of two people looks to double population - and it comes with a FREE house

A house is provided overlooking the harbour, and applicants must be up for living in a “wild and remote” spot.

Work would include maintenance of off-grid power and water, paths, woodland and infrastructure.

Other tasks would include vehicle maintenance housekeeping and laundry for two holiday cottages.

Red deer stalking and venison processing would also be on the cards, as well as selling produce and welcoming visitors.

Greece: Rescue operation launched for injured whale calf stranded in shallow waters near Athens

Divers, vets, the coastguard and a government minister are trying to help an injured whale calf after it became trapped in shallow waters off the coast of Greece, near Athens.

The young Cuvier's beaked whale, or Ziphius cavirostris, was spotted in shallow waters in the area of Vouliagmeni on Thursday before divers were called to guide it back out to sea.

But it reappeared in a seaside area near Athens on Friday morning.

The species typically lives in much deeper waters, leaving experts fearing the worst for the young whale.

Why the Met Police suddenly changed its mind on redacting the Sue Gray report

Friday came the bombshell.

Gray’s inquiry can be published but without any mention of any events that police are investigating.

In other words, if an event did not break the rules, the Met is happy for the public to read about it.

But if the gathering was potentially law-breaking then it will be cut from anything placed in the public domain until criminal investigations are complete.

Nazir Afzal, a former chief Crown prosecutor for the North West, said on Twitter: "This is absolute nonsense from the Met Police. A purely factual report by Sue Gray cannot possibly prejudice a police investigation. They just have to follow the evidence, of which the report will be a part."

Adam Wagner, a human rights barrister who has become expert on interpreting complex coronavirus laws and explaining them to the public on social media, said: "I am not a criminal lawyer so perhaps I am missing something.

"How would a factual civil service report about events the police are investigating 'prejudice' their investigation?"

Ex-Metropolitan Police chief 'confused' why force wants Sue Gray to omit details from her report

A former Metropolitan Police chief superintendent has said he's "confused" as to why to force wants Sue Gray to omit details from her partygate report.

Dal Babu gave a scathing assessment of how the force has handled the case, saying he would have expected a criminal inquiry to have been launched much sooner than it was.

‘Grossly unethical’ government ‘nudge unit’ accused of scaring the public over Covid
Tactics of ‘deploying fear, shame and scapegoating’ during pandemic labelled an ‘ethically dubious practice’

The Government’s “nudge unit” was established in the Cabinet Office in 2010 and is designed to apply behavioural science principles to public policy.

It has been used to encourage the public to pay their taxes, turn up in court and donate their organs when they die.

It is officially known as the “behavioural insights team”, but little is known about how it actually operates.

Corruption experts warn Boris Johnson’s government is worst since WWII
Researchers say failure of integrity at No 10 could have serious long-term consequences for UK

Experts have warned that Boris Johnson's administration is more corrupt "than any UK government since the Second World War".

Researchers at Sussex University's Centre for the Study Corruption warned that the "absolute failure of integrity at No 10" could have potentially serious consequences for the UK if allowed to fester.

It comes as opposition figures warned of the "appearance of an establishment stitch-up" over an inquiry into rule-breaking at Downing Street.
