Eighteen new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, five on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8688 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0800 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1510 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9259 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Free-range eggs return as hens are allowed back outside

From Monday hens are allowed back outside, after the government lifted restrictions imposed last November requiring them to stay indoors.

It means free-range labelling can return to shelves.

Since March, the eggs have been classified as "barn eggs" in supermarkets due to the length of time birds had been kept inside.

Mediterranean Sea seen as hot spot for climate change

Climate change is having a significant impact on the Mediterranean Sea, according to the National Network for Climate Change (Climpact) Dialogue Forum, which noted rising sea temperatures and increased salinity and sea levels.

Dr Aristomenis Karageorgis, director of the Institute of Oceanography of the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (ELKETHE)... said there has been an estimated increase in the average sea temperature of 2.09 Celsius from 1982-2020, with a rising trend of 0.054C per year.

Warmer waters create a favorable environment for the expansion of invasive alien species.

Higher minimum wage to apply from May 1, Labour Minister Hatzidakis tells ANA

As of Sunday, May 1, the basic wage will increase by 7.5 pct, on top of the 2 pct increase introduced in January 2022, rising to 713 euros per month from 663 euros previously. The corresponding minimum daily wage will increase to 31.85 euros from 29.62 euros.

Combined with the previous 2 pct wage increase in January and the reduction in social insurance contributions paid by employees, this amounts to an 11.8 pct increase in annual take-home pay, Hatzidakis noted.

Boris Johnson to appear on Good Morning Britain for first time since fridge incident
‘We’re actually going to be hearing from him, for once, tomorrow’

Boris Johnson will appear on Good Morning Britain for the first time since the fridge incident three years ago.

In 2019, the prime minister was said to have hidden inside a fridge when he was approached by GMB producer Jonathan Swain in Yorkshire for a TV interview.

In a clip that was shared widely at the time, Johnson is heard saying: “I’ll be with you in a second,” before walking inside a fridge together with his aides.

New invention turns seawater into drinking water at the push of a button

Researchers have invented a desalination device that can turn seawater into drinking water at the push of a button.

The technology uses a technique that essentially zaps the water with electicity in order to remove salt molecules, bacteria and viruses. This eliminates the need for replacement filters and high pressure pumps, which current commercially available desalination units require.

Packaged in a suitcase-sized device, it weighs less than 10 kilograms and can be powered with a portable solar panel.

This makes it suitable for use in remote and severely resource-limited areas, according to the team at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who developed it.

It is designed to be used by nonexperts, and can be controlled wirelessly through a companion smartphone app.
