Twelve new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, two on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8819 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0887 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1339 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9185 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Slippery South American Drug Cartels Going Bananas in Greece

Greece is becoming a hub for South American drug gangs to use as a conduit to move drugs and they’re becoming even more inventive and creative about it, including using bananas to hide their stashes.

Officials found 654 kilograms (1442 pounds) of cocaine worth an estimated 200 million euros ($210.80) in a banana shipment from Ecuador on April 29 that was the second big seizure of its kind this year, said Kathimerini.

That supported intelligence indicating that Latin American cartels are using Greece as a gateway for their drugs – with local help – the paper said, although it wasn’t indicated how the Greek underworld was involved.

Iraklio man arrested after nearly 40 dogs found in deplorable conditions

Nearly 40 dogs were taken out of deplorable conditions in Iraklio, Crete, on Sunday.

Also, none of the dogs had a pet health certificate as required by Greek law.

Police arrested a man on counts of neglect. The suspect is expected to appear before an Iraklio prosecutor this week.

It was not known whether the dogs will be available for adoption.

Tourism poised to absorb job-seeking Ukrainian refugees

Greece has issued nearly 10,000 residence and work permits to more than 25,000 refugees from Ukraine, with the tourism sector looking set to absorb a significant part of this new workforce.

Last month, the honorary president of the Greek Tourism Confederations (SETE), Andreas Andreadis, confided in a post on Twitter that more than 50,000 jobs in hospitality are still open. The biggest shortages, he noted, are in kitchens and service.

PM promises party faithful a clear election victory in 12 months

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Sunday his goal is for the ruling center-right New Democracy to obtain another parliamentary majority in elections “that will take place 12 months from now.”

But, to obtain that majority, two successive elections will have to take place, as the first one, fought under a proportional representation law passed by the previous leftist SYRIZA government makes it all but impossible for a single party to win the majority of the seats in the 300-member Parliament.

The Mitsotakis government has since voted a law awarding a 30-seat bonus to the party that wins the election. However, the Greek constitution provides that a new electoral law can take effect only in the second election after it is passed, unless it is approved by two-thirds of the MPs.

Starmer resigning puts more pressure on Johnson. He's too self-important to jump but there's likely to be a growing number of MPs fearful for their chance of re-election and wanting to throw him under a bus.

Keep Starmer, replace Johnson: Conservative Party elects a leader who's monogamous, honest and can speak in complete sentences. Appeals to a wide audience.

Replace Starmer, keep Johnson: Labour Party picks a leader who inspires voters. Conservatives keep a liability who destroys the myth the Conservative Party stands for traditional British values of law, order and decency and who will lose them MPs at next election.

Difficult choice.
