Twenty seven new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, one on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8816 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0871 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1343 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9199 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Ukraine: Firefighters resuscitate cat rescued from building after Russian shelling

Emergency services have shared footage of the moment they resuscitated a cat that was rescued from a burning building in Ukraine.

According to the State Emergency Service, the pet was found by rescuers who were extinguishing a fire in a five-storey residential block after Russian shelling.

In a video posted on social media, the cat’s head is moistened with water while firefighters help it breathe using compressed air.

Last month, a puppy was pulled from the rubble of a destroyed building and reunited with its owner by rescuers in Mykhailivka.

Allegations surfacing that vehicles over the 32 ton limit are crossing the temporary 'Winter Bridge' on the road up to Fiskardo rather than taking the longer diversion. Concerns now that the Bailey bridge will become unsafe as there are signs of deterioration to the wooden decking.

Tui warns no last minute deals as holiday bookings surge

Holiday giant Tui has said it expects summer bookings to "almost reach" 2019 levels this year, but warned there will be "no last minute" low price deals.

The company said bookings had surged in the past six weeks as people planned for summer breaks after the easing of Covid travel restrictions.

But it warned the impact of Covid and the Ukraine war on customer behaviour remained "difficult to predict".

Tui's boss warned of price rises and limited offers due to high fuel costs.

Greece to tax power generators’ windfall profits

The Greek government will tax the windfall profits of domestic power producers, created by the exceptionally steep increases in power prices since October, the Greek energy ministry has announced.

The Greek government will impose a 90pc tax on large power producers' windfall profits generated in October 2021-March 2022, which totalled €591mn ($623mn), Greek energy regulator RAE has calculated. The government will use the revenue generated by the tax to further support consumers, the energy ministry said.

Death could be reversible, as scientists bring dead eyes back to life
Breakthrough hints other cells in central nervous system, such as the brain, could be restored

Dead eyes from organ donors have been “brought back to life” in a breakthrough which hints that brain death may be reversible.

Scientists in the US proved that photosensitive neuron cells in the retina can still respond to light and communicate with each other up to five hours after death, sending signals “resembling those recorded from living subjects”.

Crucially these neurons form part of the central nervous system (CNS), which encompasses the brain and spinal cord, bringing the possibility that other cells in the CNS could be similarly restored, perhaps bringing back consciousness.

Writing in the journal Nature, the authors said that the study “raises the question of whether brain death, as it is currently defined, is truly irreversible”.

Greece bans LGBTQ conversion therapy

Greece on Wednesday banned conversion therapy for minors, a practice aimed at suppressing a person's sexual orientation or gender identity and which the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans community worldwide, as well as health experts, have condemned as harmful.

Under the bill, which Greece's parliament approved, psychologists or other health professionals need a person's explicit consent to perform such treatment and face fines and a prison term if they violate the law.

Greek pilot tells court he killed British wife Caroline Crouch in ‘blurred state of mind’
Babis Anagnostopoulos spends 10 hours in dock relating night of killing he originally blamed on break-in

Babis Anagnostopoulos, the Greek pilot accused of killing his British wife as she slept in their Athens home, had waited for his moment in court and, a year to the day after she took her last breath, he got it.

For almost 10 hours on Wednesday the UK-trained aviator stood in the dock relating the alleged events that led to the fatal moment on 11 May 2021 when he “lost control” and smothered Caroline Crouch, 20, to death with a pillow. The body of the couple’s dog was was also found in the entrance of the building.

No detail was too small for the court now tasked with determining whether the 34-year-old Greek should spend the next two decades in prison for a crime that has gripped the country.
