Fifteen new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, none on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8767 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0697 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1406 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9348 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

London could run out of water in 25 years as cities worldwide face rising risk of drought, report warns

Despite covering more than 70 per cent of the earth’s surface, only 3 per cent of the world’s water is suitable for drinking, and most of that is locked up in glaciers and ice caps.

Less than 0.01 per cent of the world’s fresh water is available for human use in lakes, rivers and reservoirs.

Serious fire earlier today in Minies left a village house pretty much a burnt out shell despite best efforts of firefighters. Allegedly the property was purchased by an British couple two years or so back but never occupied, possibly due to Covid. Cause of fire as yet undetermined.

Mask use: Optional at airports and airplanes from today

However, it should be noted that the rules specifically for masks will continue to differ depending on the airline. For example, companies flying to or from a destination where masking on public transport is still required should continue to encourage its use.

It is also emphasized that at-risk passengers should continue to wear a face mask regardless of the rules, ideally a FFP2 / N95 / KN95 mask that offers a higher level of protection than a standard surgical mask.

Scientists create computer powered by algae that will never run out of battery
The system has been working continuously for a year using only light and water as fuel

Scientists have made a computer that uses algae and will never run out of battery.

The breakthrough uses a species of blue-green algae called synechocystis that has been powering a microprocessor continuously for a year using only light and water as fuel.

The system is approximately the size of an AA battery and uses photosynthesis to generate a tiny electrical current, which interacts with an aluminium electrode and to maintain a working Arm Cortex M0+ microprocessor.

Even though the computer system is based on photosynthesis it does not always require light to work, and can continue producing power even when it is dark.

Sting operation: Undersea killing machines to make mincemeat of giant jellyfish
Soaring numbers of the underwater creatures to be destroyed by robot after causing havoc for fishermen

An underwater robot hunter has been built to seek out and destroy soaring numbers of jellyfish.

Jellyfish are proliferating at a rapid rate in some parts of the world, such as Japan, with sightings in British waters also becoming more common.

Such vast numbers of the animals pose a risk to the fishing industry because they get caught in nets, spoil catches and endanger crew and vessels.

With rising ocean temperatures and fewer natural predators, waters around Japan have in recent years been clogged with moon jellyfish and enormous Nomura’s jellyfish, which can grow to 6ft and weigh 440lbs.
