Kef fire risk 13/06/22: Low (https://www.civilprotection.gr/el/imerisios-hartis-provlepsis-kindynoy-pyrkagias-13062022)
Twenty new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, one on Ithaka
Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8760 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0895 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1416 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9179 €UR
Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the Post Office (https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-money).
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Simple eye examination could predict heart attack risk, says study
Researchers find that patterns of blood vessels in the retina could help identify those likely to experience cardiac problems
A simple non-invasive eye examination may be able to predict risk of heart attack when combined with other information, according to a study.
Researchers found that combining information about the pattern of blood vessels in the retina with traditional clinical factors enabled them to better identify participants’ risk of an attack, compared with established models that only included demographic data.

Hellenic Coast Guard video of a recent rescue off migrants from a drifting yacht 60 nautical miles west south west of Kefalonia. Not sure what the Kef involvement is as I think the distance takes it past Zakynthos and nearer to Katakolo, which I believe is where the fifty seven rescued occupants and two people smugglers were taken.

Allegedly a fairly rare event on Kef happened in an Argostoli 'night club' when an argument resulted in a male in mid-twenties being hospitalised off the island for injuries received. Police seeking others involved.
Apparently the injuries include a glass splinter in one eye, sight may/may not be saved. Police have identified suspect(s) they want to interview.

Starmer investigated by standards watchdog over late gift registrations
Parliament's standards commissioner is investigating whether Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer broke the rules by being late in registering earnings and gifts.
MPs must declare within 28 days any interest which might be reasonably considered to influence their actions.
Sir Keir appears to have missed this deadline on several occasions, including over Arsenal FC tickets and a payment made for writing a book.

Intact Ancient Tombstone Discovered on Riverbed in Western Greece
An intact ancient tombstone from the Hellenistic era is the latest discovery of archeologists working along the Arachthos river in Epirus in western Greece.
The heavy object was discovered in the river’s shallow waters, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Arta said in a Facebook announcement on Friday, providing a first glimpse of the rare find on-site before it was transferred to the Archaeological Museum of Arta.

UK reveals plans to ditch parts of EU Brexit deal
The UK government has published plans to get rid of parts of the post-Brexit deal it signed with the EU in 2020.
It wants to change the Northern Ireland Protocol to make it easier for some goods to flow from Great Britain to Northern Ireland.
But the EU opposes the move, saying that going back on the deal breaches international law.
The UK government disputes this, arguing that the changes will mean the United Kingdom stays together.
The alterations are set out in the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill, to be debated and voted on by Parliament.

Plan to scrap Natural England will disrupt net zero targets, experts say
Campaigners spotted proposal to absorb conservation watchdog into Defra buried in recent government consultation
Discussions about dismantling Natural England have sparked anxiety, with experts fearing this would further damage efforts to protect wildlife and reach net zero.
Campaigners have raised the alarm after spotting the proposal buried in a recent government consultation on nature recovery, which was sent to stakeholders.
Craig Bennett, the chief executive of the Wildlife Trusts, said that “various ministers are a bit obsessed” with absorbing the conservation watchdog into the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), in effect destroying it.

Hundreds of the world’s smallest penguin wash up dead in New Zealand
Conservationists say mass die-offs have been caused by rising ocean temperatures
The kororā, also known as the little blue penguin, are being found in the northern-most region of the North Island.
The NZ Department of Conservation told RNZ that an estimated 200 tiny birds were washing up on the area’s beaches each day, and that the mass die-offs were being caused by rising ocean temperatures.
Kororā population numbers are also being affected by prolonged El Niño weather conditions, which increase sea-surface temperatures and onshore winds in New Zealand, making it more difficult for the tiny penguins to nest and feed.
