Health cuts see new-born deaths jump 43% in Greece

EU-mandated spending cuts in the Greek healthcare system has brought the country decades back into time, with the new-born death rate jumping by 43% since the beginning of the crisis, according to Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, a liberal MEP from the German FDP party.

The austerity policies, ordered by Greece's Troika of international creditors, have worsened the socio-economic situation in Greece to a level not seen since the Second World War, Chatzimarkakis said.

Speaking at the European Parliament in Brussels on Wednesday (5 March) Chatzimarkakis, who is of Greek descent, said that what the EU allows the Troika to do in Greece goes against fundamental human rights.

Error in Parliament as bill is passed without majority

The government was pondering on Friday how to correct a mistake in Parliament that saw a bill passed on Thursday even though it had not received the majority of the votes.

The legislation, regarding changes to the police’s regional services, failed to receive the support of coalition partner PASOK as well as opposition MPs. This meant it received 127 “no” votes against 126 “yes” ballots from New Democracy lawmakers.

However, Deputy Parliament Speaker Christos Markoyiannakis insisted that the bill had passed.

EU leaders have threatened Russia with sanctions, which could include visa bans, asset freezes and various economic restrictions unless it engages in direct talks with the coup-appointed Ukrainian government.

The European Council President, Herman Van Rompuy, on Thursday warned... "If there is no de-escalation, the EU will decide on additional measures, such as visa restrictions... "

British Prime Minister David Cameron threatened that asset freezes and unspecified travel bans could be imposed on Russia "relatively quickly," unless progress is made on dialogue with Ukraine.

Not sure exactly what effect visa bans would have but reportedly there are a lot of Russian tourists intending to visit Greece this summer.

Academy members voted for Oscar-winning 12 Years A Slave 'without watching it'

As host Ellen DeGeneres put it, to equal laughs and winces from the audiences: "Possibility number one: 12 Years a Slave wins best picture. Possibility number two: You're all racists."

A Los Angeles Times article on the Oscars states:

'Two Oscar voters privately admitted that they didn’t see 12 Years A Slave, thinking it would be upsetting. But they said they voted for it anyway because, given the film’s social relevance, they felt obligated to do so.'

Italian man discovers escort is son's girlfriend

A 70-year-old man from Treviso, a city in the northern Italian region of Veneto, became embroiled in a bitter feud with his son after booking an escort who turned out to be his offspring’s girlfriend.

When the father booked an escort in the nearby city of Vicenza, he got the shock of his life when she turned out to be his 40-year-old son’s South American girlfriend, Il Gazzettino reported.

Clearly embarrassed, the pair promptly bid each other farewell, the newspaper said.

The man then pondered whether to tell his son that the woman was in fact an escort, and not the waitress she claimed to be, while at the same time exposing his use of the dating service.

The Liberal Democrats suffered an embarrassing blow on Thursday after being beaten by the Bus-Pass Elvis Party in a council by-election.

Liberal Democrat candidate Tony Marshall found himself in last place with only 56 votes at the by-election in Clifton North Ward, Nottingham.

But inching ahead of him with 67 votes was Bus-Pass Elvis candidate David Laurence, whose polices include the legalisation of brothels with a 30 per cent discount for OAPs.
