Ninety four new cases of coronavirus confirmed yesterday on Kefalonia by EODY, four on Ithaka.

Today's bank rate:
1 GBP = € 1.1509
1 USD = € 0.8511

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

The one simple diet switch that could add almost a decade to your life
Norwegian researchers claim to have the answer to boost life expectancy – but it does involve midlifers removing some old favourites

Removing steak, sausages and bacon from your diet at the age of 60 in favour of more fish, nuts and beans can add almost a decade onto your life, a study has found.

A new study from researchers at the University of Bergen, Norway, has discovered that following an “optimal diet” from the age of 60 adds 9.1 years to the life expectancy of a 60-year-old European man, and 8.1 years for a woman.

‘Only detectable impacts’ of Brexit are costs, delays and paperwork, says MPs’ committee
The Public Accounts Committee ‘repeatedly’ raised concerns about the impact of new trading arrangements

Brexit is battering UK businesses with higher costs, more paperwork and border delays, according to a damning report by an influential group of MPs.

The Public Accounts Committee said it had “repeatedly” raised concerns about the impact of new trading arrangements and that it remained concerned, with disruption expected to worsen as the pandemic subsides.

The image shows the Prime Minister flanked by three members of staff, one wearing tinsel and another a Santa hat, at the event on December 15, 2020.

At the time London was under Tier 2 regulations banning any social mixing between two or more people from different households.

Official guidance also stated: “You must not have a work Christmas lunch or party, where that is a primarily social activity and is not otherwise permitted by the rules in your tier.”

Just two days after the Mirror's initial story, the PM said: “I can tell you once again that I certainly broke no rules."

But the Christmas quiz is not one of the dozen No 10 gatherings under investigation by police.

Martin Lewis calls on Kwasi Kwarteng to apologise for fraud remarks made in defence of Boris Johnson

Martin Lewis has accused Kwasi Kwarteng of “denigrating the experience of fraud victims” with his “outrageous” defence of Boris Johnson’s false claim that crime had fallen under his leadership.

Seeking to rescue his premiership amid the fallout from Sue Gray’s Partygate update, the prime minister told the House of Commons that crime had fallen by 14 per cent – a claim later denounced as “misleading” by the head of the UK Statistics Authority watchdog.

Mr Johnson’s claim is only true when excluding fraud and computer misuse – with overall crime having actually risen by 14 per cent, according to the latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) data.

But seeking to defend the prime minister, the business secretary suggested on Sunday that Mr Johnson had only been referring to crime which “people experience in their-day-to-day lives”.

On Tuesday, the MoneySavingExpert website founder accused Mr Kwarteng of causing an “outrage” with the comments, and urged him to apologise.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/martin-lewis-fraud-kwasi-kwarteng-b2010723.html

Interesting way of looking at things - fraud doesn't impact people in their day-to-day lives. That's despite fraud and computer crime increasing by 47%. Of course, a great way to reduce crime figures is to not count rape, murder, car theft... or Downing Street parties. Hey ho, just a thought.

Kurt Zouma fined £250,000 and cats taken by RSPCA after video emerges

The West Ham defender Kurt Zouma has been handed a maximum fine by the club, understood to be £250,000, following widespread condemnation over viral footage of him dropping, kicking and slapping one of his cats.

The RSPCA also said it had taken his two cats into care adding: “We’d like to reassure people that we’re investigating and the cats are safe and in our care. We have been dealing with this since before the clip went viral online and we need to follow proper legal process and not discuss due to UK GDPR laws.”

West Ham United, which condemned the video, acted as the club faced significant backlash over its decision to play Zouma, who earns £125,000 a week, in the starting line-up for Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Watford. The fine will be donated to animal rights rights charities and the player could face further sanction. The French international has apologised for his actions.

Met Police 'reviewing' decision not to investigate No 10 Christmas quiz after new photo emerges
Boris Johnson and two members of staff are seen near a bottle of opened alcohol at the event which took place during Covid restrictions

The Metropolitan Police has said it is reviewing its assessment that a Christmas quiz held in No 10 in December 2020 did not meet the threshold for criminal investigation after an image surfaced of Boris Johnson near a bottle of sparkling wine.

The photo shows the Prime Minister and two members of staff, one with tinsel draped around their neck, near the bottle of alcohol and an open packet of crisps at the quiz, which happened during Covid restrictions.

Responding to the photo, the Met Police said: "The MPS previously assessed this event and determined that on the basis of the evidence available at that time, it did not meet the threshold of criminal investigation. That assessment is now being reviewed."

Not sure what the existance/absence of alcohol has got to do with it, the rules were obviously broken, with or without alcohol.

Met considering whether to investigate PM over Downing Street flat refurb
Exclusive: Solicitors for Labour have written to Cressida Dick suggesting force is ‘duty-bound’ to launch inquiry

Scotland Yard is considering whether to investigate Boris Johnson over the funding of his Downing Street flat renovation after Labour’s lawyers claimed there was a “reasonable suspicion” that he had broken anti-bribery laws.

Solicitors on behalf of Labour wrote to the Metropolitan police commissioner, Dame Cressida Dick, last week suggesting the force was “duty-bound” to begin a formal investigation.

They said the prime minister may have acted improperly by having “linked” a request for funds to cover the refurbishment works – which eventually cost at least £112,000 – with a promise to “promote a project” backed by the benefactor.

‘Very brave or very stupid’: Scientists’ warning over early ending of Covid rules in England
Prime minister accused of playing ‘fast and loose with people’s health’ in bid to quell rumblings within government and among Tory backbenchers

Boris Johnson’s surprise decision to end all domestic Covid restrictions in England one month early is either “very brave or very stupid”, scientists have warned.

The prime minister told MPs on Wednesday that the legal requirement to self-isolate could be scrapped by the end of this month, instead of at the end of March as originally planned.

But the move has been met with unease by the scientific community, with national Covid cases once again on the rise.

One member of the government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) said that no consideration had been given to the prospect of lifting self-isolation rules during the most recent meeting.

Another scientific adviser to the government said the PM’s announcement “doesn’t seem very cautious”, adding that he was “very concerned that the number of cases remains very high”.

Police to email 50 people in Downing Street party inquiry

The Metropolitan Police will email more than 50 people as part of its inquiry into lockdown parties at Downing Street and Whitehall.

A questionnaire will be sent to people alleged to have been at events on eight dates between May 2020 and April 2021.

It will ask for their account of what happened and "must be answered truthfully", the Met said.

Topsey turvey: The cat that invaded the Hillsborough pitch seven months after it went missing

A pet that was christened the "Hillsborough cat" after it ran onto Sheffield Wednesday's pitch during a match has been identified as Topsey, who has been missing from home for seven months.

The fast-moving feline stopped play before being carried off the pitch by Wigan Athletic's Jason Kerr in the 94th minute of their game against Wednesday last night (8 February).
