Kef fire risk 03/06/22: Low

Seven new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, none on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8775 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.1013 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1396 €UR
$1 USD = 0.908 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Joe Biden set to send refugees to Spain as migrant crisis worsens

Spain is facing a labour shortage, despite having the highest unemployment rate in the EU at 13.5 per cent.

There are more than 100,000 vacancies in the tourism sector, while the country is short of at least half a million building workers, according to unions and companies.

Spain has long been a favoured destination for people from Latin America, given the shared language.

Crates of prosecco and beer delivered to cabinet office after ‘mistake’ order

Crates of what appeared to be prosecco and beer were delivered to the cabinet office on Wednesday (1 June).

Footage shared online shows a Sainsbury’s driver wheeling the alcohol to the door of the building, located around the corner from 10 Downing Street.

The cabinet office claim the delivery was a “genuine mistake” and that it was intended for a “non-government address”.

It added that the alcohol was taken elsewhere and not consumed on site.

Bit of delay in Pessada on an airport transfer earlier today when smoke started to emit from the rear of the coach, seemingly near the fuel tank. Passengers promptly evacuated and fire service summoned. Not sure what happened after that but no injuries or serious damage to vehicle, so far as I'm aware.

Emotional support pets: experts warn of animal welfare risk

Taking a pet everywhere for emotional support, from aeroplanes to the daily shop, may be all the rage, but experts have warned animal welfare is at risk of being overlooked.

The use of emotional support animals has boomed in recent years, with myriad cases hitting the headlines, from the peacock that was denied a seat on a United Airlines plane, to the cat that was banned from Sainsbury’s.

But experts say the focus on human needs must not mean the potential impact on the animals themselves is overlooked.

Emotional support animals are not trained to aid their owners, as is the case for assistance animals such as guide dogs, and in many countries – including the UK – they are not covered by the same laws that protect assistance animals.

Car tyres produce vastly more particle pollution than exhausts, tests show
Toxic particles from tyre wear almost 2,000 times worse than from exhausts as weight of cars increases

“Tyres are rapidly eclipsing the tailpipe as a major source of emissions from vehicles,” said Nick Molden, at Emissions Analytics, the leading independent emissions testing company that did the research.

The average weight of all cars has been increasing. But there has been particular debate over whether battery electric vehicles (BEVs), which are heavier than conventional cars and can have greater wheel torque, may lead to more tyre particles being produced. Molden said it would depend on driving style, with gentle EV drivers producing fewer particles than fossil-fuelled cars driven badly, though on average he expected slightly higher tyre particles from BEVs.

Other recent research has suggested tyre particles are a major source of the microplastics polluting the oceans. A specific chemical used in tyres has been linked to salmon deaths in the US and California proposed a ban this month.

Beach cigarette butts targeted

With official data suggesting cigarette butts account for 30-40% of the waste that ends up on Greek beaches, a new initiative that started a few months ago as a pilot in the port and the beaches of Rafina in Attica showed that such rubbish can be reduced by up to 60% with the right information campaign and infrastructure.
