Kef fire risk 09/06/22: Medium

Eleven new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, one on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8814 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.1061 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1346 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9041 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Poisoned CCleaner search results spread information-stealing malware

Malware that steals your passwords, credit cards, and crypto wallets is being promoted through search results for a pirated copy of the CCleaner Pro Windows optimization program.

This new malware distribution campaign is dubbed “FakeCrack,” and was discovered by analysts at Avast, who report detecting an average of 10,000 infection attempts every day.

The campaign is already widespread, and the infection rates are high, so avoid downloading cracked software from anywhere, even if the download sites rank high on Google Search.

CNN Türk Openly Discusses A Turkish Invasion Of Greece

A Turkish political analyst openly spoke on CNN Türk about a military invasion of the Greek islands without even the slightest reaction from the presenter.

The latest typical example of the climate that has formed in Turkey is the analysis of Hakan Bayrakçı on Greek-Turkish relations, who – in front of the map of Greece – proposed that Turkey occupy “some Greek islands” so that “the politics of Greece and the USA will collapse.”

Rumours circulating that Tom Cruise will be starring in a new film about HMS Perseus, some of the rumours claim it will be filmed on Malta rather than Kef. So far can't find any reliable confirmation.

Prince William spotted selling Big Issue in central London

The Duke of Cambridge has been spotted in central London quietly helping sell Big Issue magazines.

The magazine is sold by homeless people, long-term unemployed people, and those who need money to avoid getting into debt, the Big Issue says.

Hm, maybe one or two other princes should be doing that...

Turkey's Erdogan warns Greece to demilitarize Aegean islands

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday warned Greece to demilitarize islands in the Aegean, saying he was “not joking” with such comments.

Turkey says Greece has been building a military presence on Aegean in violation of treaties that guarantee the unarmed statues of the islands. It argues that the islands were ceded to Greece on condition that they be kept demilitarized.

Greece argues that Turkey has deliberately misinterpreted the treaties regarding armed forces on its eastern islands and says it has legal grounds to defend itself following hostile actions by Ankara including a long-standing threat of war if it extends its territorial waters.

Erdogan's warning comes amid a new escalation in tensions between the NATO allies that have a history of disputes over a range of issues such as mineral exploration in the eastern Mediterranean and rival claims in the Aegean Sea.

Boris Johnson sets out plan for benefit claimants to get mortgages

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has unveiled plans to allow benefits to be put towards mortgages in England, as he sought to relaunch his premiership.

He made the "benefits to bricks" pledge his first policy speech since surviving a bid to oust him by Tory MPs.

Speaking in Blackpool, he also vowed to extend a scheme to allow social tenants to buy their homes.

But critics say the proposals are unworkable and would make the housing crisis worse.

Population shrinking at alarming rate
Citing ‘immediate and significant danger,’ PM announces national council to reverse trend

Greece’s population is set to decline over the next 20 years, and to shrink by 24% by 2100 to 8.1 million, according to research by the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE) presented at the Demographics 2022 conference in central Athens.

More specifically, IOBE data showed that Greece’s population decreased by 4%, or 441,000 people, in the decade 2011-21 as both the natural balance (births-deaths) and the migrant balance are negative.

Zakynthos based Levante Ferries Fior di Levante suffered a mechanical failure this morning on the Poros-Kyllini crossing. Managed to get into Kyllini port OK but confined to port until repaired and assessed fit to sail.  Thirty one passengers on board for that crossing.

Boris Johnson tells workers to accept pay cuts or UK faces 1970s–style ‘stagflation’

Workers will have to settle for real-terms pay cuts if Britain is to avoid 1970s–style “stagflation” and soaring interest rates, Boris Johnson has warned.

In a major speech, the prime minister performed a startling U-turn on a promise – made just months ago – to create a high-wage economy, instead highlighting the pain to come from rising inflation.

Brighton Cat Killer 'may have attacked over 40 cats'

Steve Bouquet, known as the "Brighton Cat Killer," was convicted of attacking and maiming 16 cats between October 2018 and May 2019, leaving nine dead.

He was found guilty of 16 offences of criminal damage in relation to the cats, as well as possession of a knife in June last year, and sentenced to five years and three months in prison.

However, in a documentary on the killings broadcast last night, police have now revealed they suspect Bouquet may have been responsible for attacking more than 40 cats across Brighton.

Bouquet died in prison earlier this year.
