Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.9196 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1099 USD
£1 GBP = 1.0874 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9010 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

New evidence emerges of baby abuse in Thessaloniki

Police said they have found new evidence that a 48-year-old nursery carer abused young children at a daycare center in Thessaloniki. She was arrested last November after a complaint by a colleague.

Initially, the charges related to accusations of physically abusing four children. She was referred to trial, accused of beating and abusing infants up to 18 months old, and was given a three-year, nine-month prison sentence. However, she appealed and was released.

A statement by police in Thessaloniki on Monday who continued the preliminary investigation after her arrest said she committed the same offenses against an additional eight children and that a case file was opened against her.

‘Catastrophic’ earthquake in Turkey and Syria kills at least 3,800 people
Dozens of countries offer help as rescue workers and residents frantically search for survivors after devastating 7.8-magnitude tremor

The magnitude-7.8 quake, which hit in the darkness of a winter morning, was followed by a second, 7.5 quake in the middle of the day on Monday, as rescuers in both countries were still attempting to search for survivors.

By the early evening, the death toll in Turkey stood at 2,379, the the country’s emergency services said, and more than 14,483 people were recorded as injured. Yunus Sezer, who heads Turkey’s disaster relief agency AFAD, said nearly 15,000 search and rescue personnel had been deployed to the region.

At least 1,444 people were killed in Syria, according to figures from the Damascus government and rescue workers in the north-western region, which is controlled by rebel groups.

The toll of 3,823 was expected to rise as rescue workers and residents searched frantically for survivors under the rubble of crushed buildings in cities on both sides of the border.

Television images from Turkey showed shocked people standing in the snow in their pyjamas, watching rescuers dig through the debris of damaged homes. Buildings were levelled while many people were still asleep.

Death toll expected to grow. Greece is among countries that have sent/will send aid.

It's McDonald's Australia, Greek is only one of ten languages on the box but what an ideal way to tell the Bruce / Shelagh in your life just how little much you love them.

And some say romance is dead!

Bard: Google launches ChatGPT rival

Google is launching an Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered chatbot called Bard to rival ChatGPT.

Bard will be used by a group of testers before being rolled out to the public in the coming weeks, the firm said.

Bard is built on Google's existing large language model Lamda, which one engineer described as being so human-like in its responses that he believed it was sentient.

The tech giant also announced new AI tools for its current search engine.

AI chatbots are designed to answer questions and find information. ChatGPT is the best-known example. They use what's on the internet as an enormous database of knowledge although there are concerns that this can also include offensive material and disinformation.

Later today Microsoft are expected to announce their ChatGPT rival.

Anyone going from Pyrgi to Argostoli - or vice verse - via Ainos is advised to have snow chains fitted, road gets icy around the church of Agios Elevtherios and police are likely to be checking vehicles.
