Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8840 GBP   £1 GBP = 1.1312 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.1266 USD   $1 USD = 0.8975 €UR
1 €UR = $ 1.7155 AUD   $1 AUD = 0.5829 €UR

Based on National Bank of Greece exchange rates.
Other banks likely to offer rates which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g. the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

A couple or road closures and diversions this Sunday due to karnavali celebrations:

In Lixouri traffic prohibited from 10:00 until end of play around Πλατείας Εθνικής Αντίστασης (National Resistance Square) and from the square along A Laskartou to the Port Authority building

In Poros from 11:00 until end of play the road from the main Vallerianos - Poros road (by the kiddies playground), along the square and up to the junction with the Poros - Argostoli road at Odysseus Palace hotel.

Israeli football fans assault foreigner in downtown Athens

Tension erupted among fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv earlier on Thursday in Syntagma Square in downtown Athens with the Israeli team’s fans allegedly assaulting a foreign man of Arab descent who was exiting the metro station.

The Israeli club’s supporters had gathered at Syntagma a few hours before their match against the Greek team Olympiakos in the Europa Conference League.

According to initial reports, the foreigner sustained minor injuries, sparking a commotion at the scene.

After Seven-Year Wait, Greece Finally Makes Medical Marijuana Available

It was a long time coming – seven years of delays – but Greece has officially made medical cannabis available to patients for the first time, with a prescription, to treat conditions where marijuana has proved effective.

That includes vomiting from chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and combination therapy against HIV or hepatitis C; chronic pain; spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injuries; and as an appetite suppressant in palliative care.

The Sports Riot That Nearly Destroyed Constantinople in 532 AD

The Greek world has a troubled past of sports riots, particularly with football hooliganism, but this pervasive history goes back further than one might expect, with one instance nearly leading to the destruction of Constantinople and the overthrow of the Eastern Roman emperor.

The Nika Riot (alternatively referred to as the Nika Revolt or Nika Uprising) in 532 AD was one of the deadliest riots in human history and certainly the worst to have occurred in the period of Late Antiquity. It led to the deaths of approximately 30,000 people.

The riot occurred during the rule of the Roman Emperor Justinian I and was largely instigated by the city’s two major chariot racing teams – the Blues and the Greens.

Post Office 'not fit' to oversee compensation for Horizon victims, say MPs

MPs on a parliamentary committee say the Post Office is "not fit" to handle compensation schemes for victims of the Horizon scandal.

The Business and Trade Committee has called for the Post Office to be completely removed from overseeing compensation schemes, in a report released on Thursday.

The report concluded the company is “not fit for purpose to administer any of the schemes of redress required to make amends for one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in British history”.

Head teacher sacked for tapping toddler son on hand

A head teacher who was sacked for “assault” after tapping her toddler son on the hand was unfairly dismissed, a tribunal found.

Shelly-Ann Malabver-Goulbourne was trying to get her three-year-old to stop playing with a bottle of hand sanitiser in her office when she used two fingers to attract his attention.

The incident was witnessed by the teacher in charge of child safety who accused her of hurting her son and filed an official complaint which led to the head being suspended and the police called.

Despite the police ruling that her actions were “reasonable chastisement” by a parent, Ms Malabver-Goulbourne was found guilty of gross misconduct and sacked.

She is now in line for compensation after an employment judge concluded there was no evidence that she had committed “physical chastisement or an assault” and ruled her dismissal unfair.

JK Rowling reported to police by trans activist India Willoughby for ‘misgendering’

JK Rowling has been reported to the police by trans broadcaster India Willoughby over “misgendering” on social media.

Willoughby, a newsreader and Loose Women presenter, claimed to have contacted Northumbria Police about a series of online posts by the Harry Potter author.

It comes after Rowling, 58, called Willoughby, who is Britain’s first trans newsreader, a “man” in posts on X, formerly Twitter.

Willoughby, also 58, said the best-selling author had “definitely committed a crime” in her posts on Sunday and that it was a “cut-and-dry offence”.

Responding to the claim, which was made in an interview with Byline TV, Rowling said no law compelled her to refer to Willoughby as female.

Marina, Joyce and the other volunteers at Animal Rescue Kefalonia are getting knackered humping heavy loads and need to raise 2,499.36 Swiss francs (around 2,700€)  to purchase an electric truck. Donations very gratefully received.

ARK has now taken delivery of the electric truck, feeding time cut from five hours to two. ARK thanks all those who donated.

Donald Trump told to pay six-figure costs of firm he sued

Donald Trump has been told to pay the six-figure legal costs of a company he sued over claims of "perverted" sex acts and bribes to Russian officials.

Mrs Justice Steyn threw out the case against Orbis Business Intelligence, a consultancy founded by former MI6 officer Christopher Steele, last month.

She found that Mr Trump's compensation claim was "bound to fail".

In a new ruling she also ordered Mr Trump to pay Orbis's costs "of the entire claim".

The order, obtained by the PA news agency on Thursday, also said Mr Trump has made no attempt to bring an appeal.

Mr Steele, who previously ran the Secret Intelligence Service's Russia desk, was the author of the so-called Steele dossier.

This included uncorroborated intelligence claims, denied by Mr Trump, that the former US president had been "compromised" by the Russian security service, the FSB.

The High Court was told last year that Mr Trump was bringing a data protection claim over two memos in the dossier which claimed he had taken part in "sex parties" in St Petersburg and engaged in "golden showers" with prostitutes in Moscow.

Mrs Justice Steyn said Orbis has estimated its costs to be more than £600,000.

She said £300,000 should be paid by Mr Trump before the total costs are decided by a specialist judge.
