Half of tourism units may be illegal

One in two tourism accommodation units in Greece are suspected of being illegal on the basis of inspections by the Association of Hellenic Tourism Enterprises (SETE), which intends to crack down on a phenomenon that not only deprives the state of much-needed revenues but also reduces the market share of enterprises in the sector that operate legally.

Nothing really new here, most of the non EOT licenced premises are operated by Greeks. The Greek tourist association is a complete joke, they change the ground rules weekly. they still operate two licence requirements, one is for 26 weeks, one is for twelve weeks. ask four different people expect four differing answers. It usually costs 5000 euros plus for an EOT licence, the set up is as bent as a nine bob note. I seriously hope that the new austerity measures include rights for all and fair competition which would ensure transparent rules applicable to all, stop the cartel and let non Greeks have a right to let to tourists, let the tourist vote with their wallets and book quality accommodation. This is the future of Greece, the days of bare wires hanging from a bathroom are simply not acceptable, stop the backhanders and make it a fair marketplace for all.
rant over.

Good going! If I asked four diferent people I'd expect five-six different answers.

Oh come on, the new builds could be just about anywhere in a hot, sunny climate... how is one supposed to know it's Greece?

Stupid people like me wonder what the wires are for and touch them. Ouch!

Well, yes, some (ahem) bright spark might try that... I gather the wires weren't connected.
