Kefalonian Lines Nisos Kefalonia had the lifeboats out on the quayside at Poros port last night, looked like a procedural check-over.

The nice weather looks to have resulted in the first death this summer of an elderly person while swimming: body of an 80 year old recovered from the sea on Friday at Eretria, Evia island.

The new code of practice for the handling of bad loans, which the Bank of Greece has published for consultation, provides for borrowers who cannot repay loans secured against their home to be able to remain at their property by renting it after transferring the ownership to the bank.

The code published makes it possible for the borrower to transfer his or her property to the bank and to sign a lease contract for a minimum of five years during which he or she will pay rent.

In such cases, the borrower will have the benefits of the existing legislation regarding leasing, which allow him to buy back his property after the expiry of the five-year period at a price previously agreed with the bank.

Islamic law is adopted by British legal chiefs

Islamic law is to be effectively enshrined in the British legal system for the first time under guidelines for solicitors on drawing up “Sharia compliant” wills.

Under ground-breaking guidance, produced by The Law Society, High Street solicitors will be able to write Islamic wills that deny women an equal share of inheritances and exclude unbelievers altogether.

Nicholas Fluck, president of The Law Society, said the guidance would promote “good practice” in applying Islamic principles in the British legal system.

Some lawyers, however, described the guidance as “astonishing”, while campaigners warned it represented a major step on the road to a “parallel legal system” for Britain’s Muslim communities.

Renewable energy from rivers and lakes could replace gas in homes
A revolutionary system using water-sourced heat pumps is being tested on a new development

Millions of homes across the UK could be heated using a carbon-free technology that draws energy from rivers and lakes in a revolutionary system that could reduce household bills by 20 per cent.

Have we not got our own laws,

Or does this mean eventually we can use any law in the world that suites  :hmm:

Locals horrified as council has stray horses shot dead in front of bystanders

Local people have condemned a council as ‘wicked’ after it had two horses shot dead because they had entered a park unsupervised.

The animals were killed after police were called to Leavesden Country Park in Hertfordshire following reports of horses being on the loose in the area.

Police along with the workers for the Three Rivers District Council then spent four hours attempting to capture them.

When they couldn’t, the decisions was made to shoot the pair and a gun wielding man riding a quad bike was deployed.

In Greece uproar over plan to dispose of Syrian chemical weapons in the Mediterranean

From priests and environmentalists to trawlers and tour operators, thousands of Greeks took to the streets of Crete Sunday to protest a United Nations program designed to destroy Syrian chemical weapons in the Mediterranean, turning one of the most popular holiday hot spots in Europe into a potential graveyard of drifting, highly toxic agents.

Staged in Arkadi, a small village tucked in the highlands of Crete and reknown for a bloody local revolt against Ottoman occupiers 150 years ago, the protest marks the latest show of local resistance to the international operation, which demonstrators deem the deadliest threat yet to the environment and their livelihood. Crete police and organizers contacted by phone, put the number of demonstrators at over 10,000, making the protest the biggest yet in Europe against the United States-led decommission plan.

Actually these wills will be subject to current British law operating in whichever part of the UK they are drawn up in.  British law does not enforce agreements outside our legislation.  Sharia compliant wills will only bind those who agree to be bound by them and may be subject to Sharia court decisions.  Again these decisions only bind those who wish to be bound by them.  Anyone who disagrees can use British law to challenge them and decisions of British courts can be enforced on unwilling parties.  The article makes this clear lower down despite the rather inaccurate, inflammatory and actually ambiguous headline and opening para.  The Torygraph is rather naughtily stirring the pot.

We may or may not like any of this but we cannot prevent people from creating their own jurisdictions and legal systems but equally they cannot be imposed on unwilling parties.  The same applies to Jewish Beth Din courts.

So let me get this straight....you can't afford the mortgage payments but can afford to pay rent (which in my experience is higher than mortgage payments), then after 5 years you somehow save enough cash to buy your property back!  I am obviously missing something here.....
