Canned cat. Max the rescue dog found another cat in distress early yesterday evening, this one with its head stuck firmly in a tin can and crawling with flies and maggots. Fortunately the vet was available and willing to deal with the emergency, when the can came off the cat's face had several pressure sores and the matted fur around its neck came off in clumps. Vet reckoned that, going by the size of the maggots, the cat had been in the can for around four days and wouldn't have lasted more than another two. Should make a full recovery.

A 14-year-old student claims to have found a way of saving the US government $400 million dollars (£240 million) - simply by changing the font they use for official documents.

Suvir Mirchandani calculated that if the government chose Garamond font instead of Times New Roman, it would use 25 per cent less ink because each character is lighter and thinner.

"Ink is two times more expensive than French perfume by volume," Suvir told CNN.

Gary Somerset, media and public relations manager at the Government Printing Office, described his work as "remarkable", but would not discuss whether the GPO was prepared to actually to actually implement Suvir's idea.

Heard Kefalonian Lines ferry crew on strike tomorrow, no news as yet about after that.

Sounds as though Ionian Ferries will also be affected.
