Travelsupermarket is reporting a spike in online searches for destinations with no cases of coronavirus, including the Greek island of Santorini, which is up 165% from last week... By contrast, searches to destinations in Spain and Italy are down by 80%.

A growing number of airlines are now introducing more flexible change policies to help customers who may want to postpone or cancel trips, according to lonelyplanet.com (https://www.lonelyplanet.com/articles/airlines-refunds-coronavirus)

Same approach being adopted by the cruise companies. As things stand, Costa Victoria (https://www.costacruises.co.uk/cruising-soon.html) won't be calling in to Kefalonia on 02 April as planned as its cruise schedule has been cancelled until 25 April, so it should arrive on 27 April as planned. Before that, Costa Mediterranea will be calling into Argostoli on 18 April, the same day Silver Spirit (https://www.silversea.com/destinations/mediterranean-cruise/athens-to-athens-sl200415009.html) calls in. SilverSea Cruises are offering refunds to passengers who want to cancel or reschedule, as are P&O (https://www.pocruises.com/travel-health-advisories/flexible-cancellation-policy). The Oceana still due to call in to Argostoli on 28 April. MSC Opera has cancelled cruises in the Med from 10 March to 21 April but isn't due to call into Kef until 05 May.

Might be worth noting that the British Government is advising people aged 70 or above to skip cruising until things settle down: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/cruise-ship-travel

Travellers might want to review their insurance as some companies are withdrawing cover for any claims due to coronavirus, according to the BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-51871776).

There are no cases of the coronavirus on Kefalonia, so I am thankful that cruise ships have been banned. The virus has spread quickly around the World mainly due to air travel, so I am hopeful that incoming International flights will also be banned.

If there's no actual ban then it could, in effect, occur by default: anyone arriving from outside of Greece is expected to self-isolate for 14 days and there's little open to appeal to tourists, anyway.

Trouble is, many locals depend on tourism to put a roof over their head and food on the family table. Not an easy one.

What strikes me as a little strange is people interested in visiting places with no known coronavirus... once these people arrive the virus probably won't be far behind.

Travel advice: coronavirus (COVID-19)

Guidance for British people travelling and living overseas during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Last updated 17 March 2020 - updated with latest advice against all non-essential travel worldwide

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) now advises British people against all non-essential travel (https://www.gov.uk/government/news/travel-advice-foreign-secreatary-statement-17-march-2020) worldwide. This advice takes effect immediately and applies initially for a period of 30 days.

Quarantine while you are abroad

If the local authority where you are proposes to quarantine you for your own protection, you should follow their advice. When you are abroad, your safety and security is their responsibility.

If there are suspected cases of coronavirus where you are, you may need to remain in your hotel room or accommodation for 14 days, move to quarantine facilities, take tests for coronavirus and, if positive in some cases, be hospitalised abroad.

You should also contact your airline or travel company, and your insurance provider as soon as you can. We only organise assisted departure in exceptional circumstances.

We publish all our Travel Advice on GOV.UK. (https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/greece)

Sounds some good advice in there: if you go abroad you can't be sure about getting a flight/ferry home. Makes sense not to go.

Greece risks missing out on tourism season

The suspension of the operations and payments of major international tour operators such as Tui AG and the FTI Group due to the coronavirus epidemic are creating a cash drought for Greek tourism and threatening to devastate the season’s prospects.

Unless the situation reverts to normal by July, the second half will also be missed, leading many tourism-related companies to bankruptcy.

We got back from Tenerife last night, been in lockdown for our two last days, very disappointed with sleazyjet, both flights for yesterday were cancelled (we were due on the earlier flight) the day before i signed in to ejet, to check, it showed our flight had been cancelled but allowed me to book the later flight same day, which i did, it was lucky that i checked at 8 in the morning and changed because they did not send us an email until 4.30pm to tell us the flight had been cancelled, there was nothing left then! they classed it as a rescue flight, lots of people got caught out and ended up stuck, the airport was like a war zone, huge queues to get drinks from a vending machine, loads wearing masks, we have put our Kalamata trip on hold for May, we have flight booked for Kef in September, i am not holding my breath for that, we shall see!

I tried to get a refund for my May 5th flight this morning, and was told No, both airports are still open, so if you cancel it will be a Choice
Realistically, I'm guessing from BeeTee's comment above, easyJet will do the honourable thing nearer the time.
At the moment I have a consultant advising stay indoors until December, and easyJet intimating they'll be running flights in May
All so jolly confusing 😷

Just received an email from easyJet

"...Due to the unprecedented circumstances, we’re launching our winter schedule early so that if you have an existing booking you can change to a flight for travel up until February 2021.

We’ve waived our change fees until further notice, so you can currently amend the date and/or destination of your existing flight booking for free. The quickest and easiest way to do this is via Manage Bookings on our app. We’ve also got a dedicated Customer Service number to support those wanting to change existing bookings: 0330 365 5030.

Until midnight on Tuesday 24/3/20, fares for our flights from 25th October 2020 - 28th February 2021 will be available at or below £29.99 one way per person.
These fares are available on our website to book now..."

I'm thinking, worth a punt. Book a cheap return for Oct now, then swallow the Admin charge to change it to Summer 2022, by when the Four Horseman should have gone home

Well, it seems as though there's some confusion but I did see Haris Theoharis, Greek tourism minister, interviewed on ITV and he did say Brits need not apply. At least, he didn't think the UK's coronavirus record would be good enough by 01 July. Report and video clip of interview on itv.com/news (https://www.itv.com/news/2020-05-20/greece-to-allow-international-flights-to-tourist-destinations-from-july-1/).

And even if Brits are allowed to holiday in Greece in the near future, the "air bridges" allowing Brits to travel abroad and not quarantine on return to UK appears to be fantasy, according to the Daily Telegraph (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2020/05/20/grant-shapps-air-bridges-plan-holidaymakers-escape-quarantine/).

Now seems that it all depends on which UK airport you fly to Greece from. Quotes are from an article in The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/31/greece-to-resume-flights-from-uk-on-15-june-with-strict-rules):

Quote
Greece to resume flights from UK on 15 June with strict rules

Greece has announced it is ready to “welcome the world”, and that it will resume flights to the country’s two major airports as of mid-June, including from the UK.

Seeking to clarify a previous announcement, the centre-right government said all air links with Athens and Thessaloniki, the northern capital, will be reinstated from 15 June “in a bridge phase” before direct flights to mainland and island destinations restart on 1 July.

The rules, however, will be strict. Passengers flying in from airports deemed by the EU’s aviation safety agency (EASA) to be in areas with “high risk of transmission of Covid-19” will be required to stay overnight in a designated hotel for testing. “If the test is negative then the passenger self-quarantines for seven days,” said a statement released by the Greek foreign ministry at the weekend. “If the test is positive, the passenger is quarantined under supervision for 14 days.”

Those found to not have the highly contagious virus could continue their journey and self-isolate wherever they were headed, but people who tested positive would be monitored by doctors in a hotel both paid for and appointed by the government, officials said.

OK, so that's if you fly from an airport deemed to be in an area with a high risk of transmission of Covid-19. If you can find a UK airport not in an area with high risk of transmission of Covid-19 and that's flying to your part of Greece, then:

Quote
“If your travel originated from an airport not in the EASA affected-area list, then you are only subject to random tests upon arrival,” the statement said.

The two-tier system will end and only spot checks will be conducted once direct international flights resume in July.

Way that reads to me: you can live and work in an area with a high risk of transmission of Covid-19 but if you fly from an airport not on the Greek blacklist then, hey, you might just get randomly tested upon arrival, or you might not. Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester are among ten UK airports on the blacklist, no idea what the others are or if there are actually any UK airports not on the list. Also reads to me as though, from 01 July, it's open season. Hmmmmmmm.........

It has now been confirmed that Greece will also accept arrivals from airports deemed high-risk by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), which includes British airports, but that they will be subject to testing and possible quarantine.

Tourism minister Harry Theoharis told the ANA-MPA news agency: “Tourists originating from airports listed on EASA are obliged to be tested once they land in Greece and remain at a designated hotel for one day. If the test turns out negative, these visitors will then be obliged to observe a seven-day quarantine. If their sample is positive, they will remain in a 14-day quarantine and their health will be monitored."
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/06/01/travel-restrictions-greece-will-allow-return-british-tourists/

Hm, slightly different to what I understood. Now seems you'll be able to fly from Heathrow / Gatwick / Manchester, etc, but have to spend a week in quarantine (plus one day mandatory for all new arrivals) if the test results say you don't have Covid-19, or two weeks (+ 1 day?) if the test results are positive.

And, so far, still two weeks quarantine upon return to the UK.

Can't see Greece getting many UK visitors as things stand  :dunno:

UK travellers unable to fly to Greece as country reopens
Ban on air travel between Britain and Greece to continue until June 30, unlike other countries

It was meant to be the moment when Greece “welcomed the world”. But in another about-turn, travellers on flights from the UK will not be accepted when the Mediterranean country reopens to tourism on Monday.

Bowing to new advice from the EU, Athens announced on Friday that the suspension of air links with Britain, in effect since March, will continue to be enforced until 30 June.

Simon Calder’s guide to overseas summer holidays in 2020

On 6 July, 111 days after the Foreign Office warned against foreign travel, British holidaymakers will once again be able to go abroad.

For millions of travellers, the brakes will be off – and many countries are eager to welcome UK holidaymakers, despite the relatively high prevalence of Covid-19.

Countries deemed by the Joint Biosecurity Centre to be handling the pandemic well, with low and declining rates of infection, will be given either amber or green status.

This status will allow returning travellers, and inbound tourists to the UK, to avoid the need to self-isolate for 14 days.

Amber status indicates nations where there is some risk of quarantine being re-introduced in the event of a rise in Covid-19 cases.

“Green” countries are those where the rates are so low that renewed quarantine status is highly unlikely.

The FCO will simultaneously lift its warning to the chosen nations.

The list of favoured countries will be revealed by Wednesday, 1 July.

While travel to Greece will also be given the go-ahead, the nation’s tourism minister has indicated that British visitors may not immediately be welcome.
https://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/coronavirus-summer-holiday-uk-quarantine-flights-full-guide-a9589466.html

Article goes on to mention that flying - and airports - may not be the usual pleasant(?) experience.

Welcome to Greece!

Beginning July 1, 2020, the Greek government has determined how the country will welcome travellers, carry out the necessary diagnostic screening and keep everyone safe throughout the season.

The Passenger Locator Form (PLF) is a key element in the planning. All travellers are obliged to complete their PLF at least 48 hours before entering the country, providing detailed information on their point of departure, the duration of previous stays in other countries, and the address of your stay while in Greece.

Zakynthos is recording a new case of coronavirus, after a positive man was found who entered the hospital on Sunday night with a high fever.

According to information, the man of Zakynthian origin had recently returned from Germany to our island where he showed symptoms, as a result of which he came to the Hospital for examination.

The man received a sample which was sent to the Pasteur Institute and tested positive.

Now Zakynthos counts the 7th positive case of coronary heart disease, after a long time that no one had.

This development comes just one day before tourism opens on the island.

You must complete a Passenger Locator Form, at least 48 hours before your arrival in Greece. Anyone arriving in Greece from abroad may be required to take a test for coronavirus (COVID-19), and to undergo a period of self-isolation/quarantine. The specific arrangements that apply depend on your point of departure. See Entry requirements for more information (https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/greece/entry-requirements).

Entry requirements

Restrictions in response to coronavirus

You must complete an online Passenger Locator Form (PLF) at least 48 hours before your arrival in Greece. The form is online (https://travel.gov.gr/#/), in English. Once you have completed the form, you will receive a QR code (which you can display either on your mobile phone, or on a printed piece of paper). You will need to show this code to the Greek authorities on your arrival in Greece.

You must wear a face mask at all times when on an aeroplane or ferry travelling to or from Greece; and whilst at airports.

When you arrive in Greece, the Greek authorities will scan the QR code generated when you completed the PLF form, and may direct you for health screening (including testing for coronavirus). The Greek authorities’ instructions will differ according to whether you arrive by land, sea or air. Check out the requirements that will apply to you on the PLF form page (https://travel.gov.gr/#/).

The Greek authorities may require you to undergo testing for coronavirus, as part of health screening after you arrive in Greece. Any passenger entering Greece is liable to be asked to undergo a test, but you are likely to be asked if you have arrived from a country outside of the EU (including the UK), either directly or via indirect flights. If you are a British national who lives permanently within the EU, or have been in another EU country for some time before travelling on to Greece, you may be asked to prove that you have not recently travelled from the UK.

After testing, you will need to self-isolate at the address given on your PLF form, filled out prior to your arrival in Greece. You will be contacted by the Greek authorities with your test results, and given further instructions (e.g. whether you are free to leave your accommodation, or must self-isolate for a longer period). If your test result is negative, you will no longer need to self-isolate. If your test result is positive, the Greek authorities are likely to ask you to self-isolate in government-provided accommodation for 14 days.

You must comply with all instructions given by the Greek authorities. Failure to do so may result in you being refused permission to enter Greece and / or legal enforcement.

You should also be aware that if other passengers on your flight subsequently test positive, you may be subject to further quarantine/ self isolation requirements. These will be mandatory and you should comply with the Greek Authorities’ requirements.

British nationals are not affected by the European Union’s measures to close EU borders to non-EU country nationals. If you’re a British national, you can still enter Greece, but you must comply with the Greek authorities’ requirements, including on testing and self-isolation.

Allegedly he flew to Bulgaria then, hm, walked hundreds of miles to the Pelion? Results of Covid-19 tests to 6,000 tourists from UK to determine if Greek borders remain open

The result of the sweeping Covid-19 tests carried out on the approximately 6,000 British tourists who arrived in Greece today, Wednesday, will determine whether or not the Greek borders will remain open for tourists entering the country from the UK.

According to the plan, almost all tourists arriving in Greece will be tested and if the number (and percentage) of those who test positive is low, not exceeding 30-40 cases, then with strict and ongoing epidemiological surveillance tests Britain’s tourism market will remain open.

However, if the numbers of those infected are higher, the government is committed to closing the borders again, weighing that the cost of the risk of spreading the coronavirus is far more important than any benefits for the tourism industry.

Greece added to Scotland quarantine list while Zante to Cardiff flight travellers must self-isolate

Travellers from Greece will be required to self-isolate at home for 14 days on arrival into Scotland as of Thursday morning, the Scottish government has said.

In Wales, meanwhile, passengers from Zante are being asked to self-isolate following a flight last week from which several people tested positive for coronavirus.

Latest update:    If you’re returning to Wales from Zakynthos (Zante), you may be required to self isolate for 14 days, and request a coronavirus test once you arrive home ('Summary). Updated information on 'Local measures and restrictions' in response to coronavirus ('Coronavirus' page).

Greece is exempt from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO)’s advice against all non-essential international travel. This is based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks.

If you are returning to Scotland from Greece on or after 3 September, you may need to self-isolate on your return. I wondered if holiday companies might do that rather than pull out of countries wholesale. However, according to that BBC link,

"Wales' Health Minister Vaughan Gething... called on the UK government to agree to meeting the devolved nations on Wednesday to urgently discuss removing Greece from the nations' quarantine exemptions lists. The meeting usually goes ahead on Thursdays."

So England might follow Scotland and remove Greece from the 'green list'. Even though:

"When a country surpasses 20 cases per 100,000 people in the past week, the UK government normally imposes 14 days of self-isolation on returning travellers. There were 14.0 coronavirus cases per 100,000 people in Greece in the seven days to 31 August, down from 14.9 a week earlier."

The Balearics vs Catalan restrictions suggest the Home Office (more likely Border Force) have no appetite for defining specific areas within a country

Little being discussed about how those returning Welsh passengers became infected.
No doubt it happened whilst in Zakynthos, unless they were all on a long weekend break.

Latest update:    Addition of information on entry requirements and passport validity from January 2021 (see ‘Entry requirements’ page)

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development office (FCDO) advise against all but essential travel to the islands of Lesvos, Tinos, Serifos, Mykonos, Crete, Santorini and Zakynthos. This is based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks. The rest of Greece remains exempt from the FCDO’s advice against all non-essential international travel.

The FCDO is not advising those already travelling in Lesvos, Tinos, Serifos, Mykonos, Crete, Santorini and Zakynthos to leave at this time. You should follow the advice of the local authorities on how best to protect yourself and others, including any measures that they bring in to control the virus. Contact your travel operator if you have any questions about your return journey.

If you are returning to the UK from Lesvos, Tinos, Serifos, Mykonos, Crete, Santorini and Zakynthos on or after 8 September, you may need to self-isolate on your return. Check the latest guidance (https://www.gov.uk/uk-border-control) for England and Northern Ireland.

Covid-19: Greece Increases Quarantine Period for UK Arrivals

The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) has updated the aviation directive (NOTAM) for arrivals to Greece from the United Kingdom, following developments concerning the new mutant strain of the coronavirus (Covid-19) that has been spreading recently in England.

According to the updated directive, all travelers arriving to Greece from the UK must self-isolate for 10 days as of 6am on Friday, December 25. The measure will be in force until January 7, 2021 at midnight.

Until December 25, travelers from the UK to Greece will continue to quarantine for 7 days as previously announced.

Upon arrival to Greece, travelers from the UK must immediately take a rapid Covid-19 test.

Greece: Mandatory Covid-19 Rapid Testing for Arrivals from UK

All arrivals to Greece from the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates are now required to take a rapid test for the coronavirus (Covid-19) upon arrival at the airport, the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) said on Monday.

The rule, in force as part of the Greek government’s efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the country, is valid from February 22 until March 8 and is an addition to the HCAA’s aviation directive (NOTAM) that concerns the temporary ban of third-country arrivals into Greece. Excluded from the ban are travelers arriving from the UK...

The mandatory Covid-19 rapid test for travelers entering Greece from UK and UAE is among a number of restrictions that already apply to international arrivals:

– the submission of the Passenger Locator Form (PLF) by all passengers of international flights to Greece remains mandatory
– all travelers from abroad must also submit a negative Covid-19 test result (PCR) performed up to 72 hours before arrival in Greece
– all passengers entering Greece from any foreign country, including EU member states, must self-isolate either at their home (permanent residents) or at the place of temporary residence declared on the PLF, for 7 days

All arrivals specifically from the UK must take a PCR test after their seventh day of quarantine in Greece. If the test is positive the quarantine will be in force for 14 days. If the test is negative the quarantine ends.

Greece lifts quarantine requirements for some visitors

Greek authorities have lifted quarantine requirements for visitors traveling from the European Union, the Schengen area, the UK, the USA, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Serbia and Israel, it was announced Monday.

Travelers will have to provide documentation proving that they have completed their vaccination against Covid-19, Civil Aviation Authority (CA) said in a Notam Monday.

Alternatively, they will have to show proof of a negative PCR test carried out 72 hours before arriving in Greece.

Travelers from UK, Denmark will need negative PCR test

Travelers from the United Kingdom and Denmark will need to procure a negative PCR test to enter Greece as of this Sunday, along with their vaccination certificate, the Health Ministry announced Wednesday.

People who stayed in these two countries for less than 48 hours are exempt from testing. The test must be taken 48 hours before the trip.

The measure is part of an effort to control the Covid-19 pandemic, the ministry said, adding that it will take effect at 6 a.m. on Sunday.
