Fourteen new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, seven on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8688 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0800 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1510 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9259 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Exercise instead of taking painkillers, arthritis sufferers told
Starting exercise programmes may initially make the pain worse, but this should settle down, NHS guidance says

People with arthritis are being urged to lose weight and exercise as the main therapies for their condition.

New NHS guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) says people who are overweight should be told their pain can be reduced if they shed the pounds.

Meanwhile, aerobic exercise such as walking, as well as strength training, can ease symptoms and improve quality of life.

Starting exercise programmes may initially make the pain worse, but this should settle down, the guidance suggests.

The guidelines also gives recommendations on the use of medicines, such as offering non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) but not offering paracetamol, glucosamine or strong opioids.

RSPCA hails ‘milestone week’ as £5,000 fines introduced and glue traps banned

The RSPCA is hailing what it calls “a milestone week” for animal welfare as three new long-fought for animal protection measures become law.

The use of glue traps, condemned by campaigners as “crude devices that cause horrific suffering”, will be banned in England - although with two loopholes.

One is that selling the traps will still be legal. Humane Society UK said that although the sale of glue traps cannot also be banned unilaterally in England without the same ban in the other three nations of the UK, it would write to retailers in England to urge them to withdraw from sale traps that will no longer be legal to use.

The other loophole is that professional pest-controllers will be able to apply for licences to use the traps, which leave rodents, birds and pets suffering stress, exhaustion, dehydration or injuries for hours or days as they struggle to get free.

Meanwhile, people who fail to properly care for their pets, zoo animals and livestock could face new fixed-penalty fines of up to £5,000.

At the same time, the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill, which also gained Royal Assent, will oblige ministers to take into account the fact that animals experience feelings and emotions when they are making policy decisions.

Janey, I read somewhere that Durham police set a precedent when they decided not to do anything about Dominic Cummings driving from London to Bishop Auckland to test his eyesight, a decision apparently supported by BoJo and the Tory faithful (at the time). Could be interesting if they decide to pursue Starmer, if they find anything to pursue.

Given his record, Boris certainly is one who would be easily distracted by a woman flashing her legs at him, might explain why he so often talks in barely coherent sentences when addressing the House.

Labour are going to look a bit silly if there's any substance to the Mail stories, be interesting to know why the Mail took so long to get to the bottom of it. This one could run and run, we'll have to see if it's got legs.

New gas pipeline boosts Europe’s bid to ease Russian supply

Mountainous and remote, the Greek-Bulgaria border once formed the southern corner of the Iron Curtain. Today, it’s where the European Union is redrawing the region’s energy map to ease its heavy reliance on Russian natural gas.

A new pipeline — built during the COVID-19 pandemic, tested and due to start commercial operation in June — would ensure that large volumes of gas flow between the two countries in both directions to generate electricity, fuel industry and heat homes.

The energy link takes on greater importance following Moscow’s decision this week to cut off natural gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria over a demand for payments in rubles stemming from Western sanctions over the war of Ukraine.
