Kef fire risk 22/06/22: Medium

Forty two new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, eight on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8859 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0867 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1288 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9202 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Murder suspect arrested in Greece as cocaine cartel smashed

A Merseyside man arrested in Greece after an operation to smash a cocaine trafficking cartel is wanted by police in the UK in connection with an unsolved gangland murder.

Four British men, believed to be aged 38, 45, 48, and 52, from Liverpool and London, were arrested at a fortified rental villa in the Greek port city of Thessaloniki last Thursday (June 9) after a dramatic raid by armed police. The Hellenic Police said a fifth British man is also wanted, but is believed to be overseas.

The ECHO can confirm the 45-year-old man, from Liverpool, is a person of interest in an unsolved murder enquiry in England. Greek media reports describe the case as involving a man being "tortured and set on fire".

The men were arrested over the seizure of 300kg of cocaine stashed in a shipment of bananas, which had been identified in the Italian port of Calabria before being seized in Thessaloniki.

Exclusive: Job for Carrie Johnson at Prince William’s Earthshot charity ‘rejected’

An attempt to secure Carrie Johnson a role with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s charity was rejected amid concerns it would be inappropriate for the Prime Minister’s fiancée to work with the royals, The Telegraph can reveal.

Simon Case, the Cabinet Secretary, approached the Royal Foundation that manages Prince William’s charity work after the birth of the Johnsons’ first child, Wilfred, in April 2020.

The Telegraph understands that Mr Johnson asked his officials to look for a charitable job for his then-fiancée after his original suggestion of giving her a plum government special adviser role was rejected by officials.

One aide suggested that Mrs Johnson instead worked in communications for the Duke and Duchess’s Earthshot Prize, which gives an annual award of £1 million for environmental work.

But after he approached the Foundation, Mr Case was given a “quiet rebuke” and the idea was “kicked into the long grass” after staff said it would be inappropriate for Mrs Johnson to work there because she was engaged to the Prime Minister.

Officials are understood to have said that Mrs Johnson’s relationship would risk undermining the political neutrality of the royals’ work, while the role may also have required her to speak to journalists.

The revelation comes after days of speculation about Mr Johnson’s involvement in his wife’s career – following claims that he tried to appoint her to a £100,000-a-year chief of staff job in the Foreign Office while he was foreign secretary and their relationship was not yet public.

Boris Johnson: Lord Geidt ‘believes Carrie job claim ripe for investigation’
Ethics adviser who quit in fury thinks allegation ‘could be a matter for his successor’

Lord Geidt – who sensationally quit as adviser on ministers’ interests last week – reportedly believes the matter of the alleged attempt to find Carrie a role at the Foreign Office could be probed by his replacement.

The ex-ethics watchdog “thinks the incident could be a matter for his successor” and “could be ripe for investigation”, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Brexit will keep wages down and make UK poorer in decade ahead, study finds

Brexit will damage Britain’s competitiveness, hit productivity and dampen workers’ wages for the rest of the decade, according to a damning new study.

The Resolution Foundation think tank’s report, in collaboration with the London School of Economics, said quitting the EU would make Britain “poorer” during the 2020s.

The study said the immediate impact of Brexit was already clear, with a “depreciation-driven inflation spike” increasing the cost of living for households and cutting investment.

The research estimated that labour productivity will be reduced by 1.3 per cent by the end of the decade through changes in trading rules, contributing to weaker wage growth.

The economists said real pay was set to be £470 lower per worker each year, on average, than it would have been if Britain had opted to stay inside the EU.

Letting staff go, and then not offering attractive enough terms to get them back might have something to do with it too

Discussion over snap elections in Greece heats up

The idea of early elections in the autumn in Greece is increasingly gaining ground with the conservative government no longer ruling it out.

The national elections are due in one year’s time but soaring prices combined with a difficult economic situation are piling pressure on the ruling New Democracy government (EPP) to call snap elections.

Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Cyprus and France to charge UK tourists to enter
Another holiday cost is on its way

Holiday makers and travellers will soon have to pay to enter European countries. The plan and charges are expected to come into effect in 2023.

Since the UK left the EU following Brexit, a number of travel changes have been implemented. Plans to introduce a visa waiver security check will mean travellers will have to apply to enter the Schengen zone - which includes most EU nations in mainland Europe - and pay a fee before travelling.

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) security check was first proposed in 2016, when the UK was yet to vote to leave the EU, before being confirmed in 2018. The UK cut ties with the EU on December 31, 2022, after an 11-month transitional period. The visa waiver will apply to travellers aged between 18 and 70. It is expected to cost around £6.

Huge Bexleyheath sinkhole spanning residential street swallows motorbike

A big sinkhole spanning an entire street in Bexleyheath swallowed a motorbike after the road caved in on Tuesday night.

Shocked residents found a big chunk of street missing after it began cracking and a seven metre hole opened up.

Police and firefighters were called at 9pm on Tuesday and quickly cordoned off the road, and the council and Thames Water are investigating what happened.

No homes were reported damaged and no one was injured.

Witnesses reportedly saw a motorbike drive past without seeing the sinkhole. The driver tried to jump it, but ended up in the hole.

Polio is back: National incident declared in UK as disease spreads for first time in nearly 40 years
Britain was proclaimed polio-free in 2003 and the last wild case was detected in 1984

On Wednesday, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) announced that a vaccine-derived polio virus had been detected in sewage from north and east London in February and April, suggesting there had been spread between individuals.

Health experts believe that the virus was probably imported from an individual who had recently been given an oral polio vaccine containing live virus, which was then shed in faeces, entering London’s sewerage system.

Polio can be spread by poor hand hygiene and, less commonly, through coughing and sneezing. The virus multiplies in the intestine and infected people excrete large quantities of virus in their faeces for several weeks.
