SDOE investigation finds blatant cases of tax evasion

The Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) is investigating dozens of cases of suspected tax evasion after cross-referencing tax declarations with bank deposits, it said Thursday, as inspections continue.

The SDOE unit for western Greece, the Peloponnese and the southern Ionian islands is investigating a lawyer over 5.8 million euros of unexplained funds.

Seems Kef municipality are warning about the danger of low energy light bulbs and the need to recycle them rather than putting in the big green bins. Advice is pretty much the same as what's on this nhs.uk page under Some tips for cleaning up, except advice from Kef municipality is to vacate the room for 30 minutes minimum.

Can't say I've ever noticed any low energy light bulb recycling points anywhere on Kef, anyone come across any?

Credit card purchases to be obligatory in 2016

There will be no retroactive taxes for 2015, according to the Finance Ministry. There will be an obligation to make purchases with credit cards in 2016, however senior citizens over 75 years of age or those living in isolated regions will be excluded from this rule.

The Official Wine of the Kremlin is Greek

The vineyard of Mount Athos or as commonly referred to in Greece the “Holy Mountain”, an autonomous polity within the Hellenic Republic under the official name Autonomous Monastic State of the Holy Mountain, produces a specific kind of wine called ” Kormilitsa”. This wine is unique since it is the only one which bears the title of  “Official Wine of the Kremlin“.

“Kormilitsa”, which in Russian means nurse, is served by the Kremlin on special occasions usually to leaders of foreign countries.

Petrol price cut: Morrisons and Asda reduce unleaded to below £1 a litre, the lowest since 2009
Other supermarket chains are expected to follow suit

Supermarket chains Morrisons and Asda have cut the price of unleaded petrol to below £1 a litre, the lowest since 2009.

Morrisons says it will be selling unleaded petrol at 99.9p per litre for as long as possible, and has also reduced the price of diesel by 1p a litre.

Asda's unleaded price will stay at 99.7p for three days, with the chain also selling diesel for 103.7p per litre.

Morrisons confirmed that the price will stay at 99.9p “for as long as possible”, but it is subject to change depending on the price of oil.

Asda have also announced they will reduce the price of their diesel and unleaded to petrol to 99.7p a litre, however the price will only run over this weekend as a limited offer.

Haven't checked this lately, so it may no longer be true, but until at least a month ago, you could recycle light bulbs in the social center in Poros.  There was/is? a big cardboard box near the doorway under the stairs for bulbs.

My Talking Tom offers up naked selfie ads to kids

My Talking Tom, heralded as the “world’s most popular cat” by the maker of the Android and iOS children’s app, is a fully animated, interactive 3D character that users can tickle, poke, play with, spend parents’ money to customize, get to repeat what they say, force to sing a pimple-themed version of Lady Gaga’s My Poker Face, and induce to dance Gangnam style.

What he is not designed to do is to serve as a delivery vehicle for ads that invite children to “f**k.”

Wee-fi: urine-powered socks can send message in emergency
Socks which send a message when powered by urine have been invented by scientists at the University of the West of England

It’s the perfect Christmas present for the person who has everything…except, perhaps, self-respect.

Scientists have invented a pair of high-tech socks which, when filled with urine, and activated by the wearer’s footsteps, produce enough power to send a message. So when nature calls, so will the socks.

Inventors at the University of the West of England in Bristol claim they could be used in an emergency to transmit a person’s coordinates, showing rescue teams that a person is alive and needing assistance (and, presumably, fresh socks.)

“We wanted the system to be entirely self-sufficient, running only on human power - using urine as fuel and the action of the foot as the pump,” said Professor Ioannis Ieropoulos, who led the research.

I'd heard this but not seen the story.  Turns out it's a Shiite demo for a religious festival that they have added an anti-ISIS element.  Surprised there was no counter-demo or even a shoot-up.  The Mail carried a story with a pic (so possibly true) of a Muslim group helping out with the floods in Cumbria the other day - didn't say whether Sunni/Shia.

Surprisingly little coverage compared with, say, Mr. Trumpet.

Think these could all be suggestions for subtle Christmas presents to give to one's boss:

Coffin with built-in speakers - drop dead

Pee-powered socks - p*ss off

F*ck your iPad - malaka

Russia fires warning shot at Turkey boat in Aegean

In the latest incident, Russia's defence ministry said its frigate Smetlivy was anchored just off the Greek island of Lemnos on Sunday morning when it spotted the Turkish fishing boat heading towards it some 1,000m (3,000ft) away.

"Despite numerous attempts by the crew of the Smetlivy, the crew of the Turkish fishing boat did not make radio contact and did not respond to visual signals by semaphore or warning flares," the ministry said in a statement.

To prevent a collision, "small arms were fired in the direction of the Turkish vessel from a range that is not lethal".

The ministry said that "immediately after that the Turkish vessel drastically changed course" and passed within half a kilometre of the Smetlivy, still making no contact with the Russian crew.

Looks like several Muslim groups have pitched in to help out:

Some of them have been travelling to the flood stricken areas daily since Tuesday to help out residents and relief groups.
