Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.9056 GBP
1 €UR = $1.0984 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1042 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9104 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Spain officials quit over trains that were too wide for tunnels

Two top Spanish transport officials have resigned over a botched order for new commuter trains that cost nearly €260m ($275m; £230m).

The trains could not fit into non-standard tunnels in the northern regions of Asturias and Cantabria.

The head of Spain's rail operator Renfe, Isaías Táboas, and the Secretary of State for Transport, Isabel Pardo de Vera, have now left their roles.

Venice canals dry up leaving gondolas and water ambulances stranded

Weeks of no rain and low tides in Italy have left the famous canals of Venice so low that gondolas and water taxis are unable to navigate some of the waterways.

A lack of rain, a high-pressure system, a full moon and sea currents are being blamed for the low tides that have left the "floating city" marooned.

Ambulances reliant on the canals in this road-less city are being forced to proceed on foot to incidents, Paolo Rossi, the head of emergency health services said.

The countries giving the most support to Ukraine - and those propping up Russia
Billions of pounds have been sent to Kyiv, but not everyone has been a committed ally

Five European Union countries have seen their imports from Russia increase by more than 50 per cent since the invasion began, Telegraph analysis shows.

The value of imports to Hungary, Slovenia, Greece, Bulgaria and Spain were as much as 250 per cent higher than average in November last year.

However, once military and humanitarian support are included, Hungary emerges as the least committed ally across the EU.

A fat cat has become the top-rated tourist attraction in a Polish city with a perfect 5-star average on Google Maps

A fat black-and-white cat called Gacek has become the top-rated tourist attraction in the Polish city of Szczecin.

Gacek has a perfect five-star rating on Google Maps. His name, pronounced gats-ek, means "long-eared bat" in Polish.

The rotund feline has beaten out Szczecin's other tourist hotspots, including a Pomeranian Dukes' Castle built in 1346.

Gacek's been living in a covered wooden box on Szczecin's Kaszubska Street for several years and he gets plenty of snacks from passers-by.

A local animal shelter has urged visitors not to feed Gacek.

His box is located outside a shop whose workers act as his de-facto guardians.

Tesco and Aldi join Asda and Morrisons in rationing salad ingredients

Tesco and Aldi have joined Asda and Morrisons in rationing certain fresh produce lines as shortages of salad crops hit the UK.

The UK’s biggest supermarket chain and the German-owned discounter announced on Wednesday that they were limiting purchases of peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes to three packs a person.

Sainbury’s, Lidl and Waitrose said they still had no restrictions.

Doctor who trained for nine years reveals payslip as NHS colleagues go on strike
Dr Souradip Mookerjee spent nine years studying medicine at the University of Cambridge while also completing a PhD - but claims his monthly paypacket is not enough to live on in London

His total sum to live off for the month in London was £1,671.47 after paying more than £1,000 in tax, National Insurance and his student loan.

The average rent costs in London for last year meanwhile stood at £935 a month - up by 22% from 2021 - according to rental site Spare Room.

He said the payslip showed his earnings for the whole month of January, which included London weighting, adding that his total salary for the year was £29k before tax.

The Government said doctors will have seen a 8.2% uplift in pay by the time they reach the end of a four-year contract later this year, at the end of which would be the "appropriate time" to discuss pay.

The BMA however said junior doctors starting on salaries of between £25,000 and £30,000 have seen real terms pay cut by 26.1% over the last 15 years, and that ministers have been aware "for months" about their concerns.

Family left 'shocked and appalled' after pack of hounds kill fox in their private garden

A family has told ITV News they are shocked and appalled after a pack of hounds killed a fox in their private garden.

The moment of death at the hands of the hunt was caught on numerous CCTV cameras at the home in Hingham, Norfolk.

The fox is seen hiding before making a break for freedom but running into the jaws of the hunting hounds.

Homeowner Daisy told ITV News: “The dogs were totally out of control. They couldn't control the dogs. And when they were trying to call them off, they had to remove the fox to get the dogs to stop.

"They left our patio covered in blood and intestine and kidney from the fox, they took the fox body and discreetly took it away, he put it inside his coat and then walked to the end of the driveway with it and passed it off to the quad bike that had no plates that was driving on the road.”
