Kef fire risk 27/06/22: Medium

Twenty nine new coronavirus cases confirmed on Kefalonia yesterday by EODY, one on Ithaka

Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.8835 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0840 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1319 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9225 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Ten day weather forecast for Kefalonia:
This is an overall forecast, due to the mountainous terrain the weather can be very localised.

Vaccination platform opens for 30-59s

The platform to book an appointment for the fourth dose against Covid-19 opened on Monday for the age group 30-59 years of age.

As with the previous doses, the platform emvolio.gov.gr. automatically suggests a date depending on when one got the last shot of a Covid vaccine and whether one was infected in the meantime.

The National Vaccination Committee has been lukewarm about the fourth dose for the younger age group, pointing out that there is currently insufficient scientific data on the additional benefit of a second booster dose with existing vaccines and that this dose is not yet mandatory.

The platform is already open for people over the age of 60, whom the Committee strongly urges to receive the second booster.

BT workers vote on strike that could disrupt internet services for remote workers

People working from home are facing "clear disruption" to internet services as thousands of BT workers vote this week to go on strike. As many as 45,000 engineers and call centre staff will decide whether to begin industrial action in as little as two weeks’ time. This makes up the vast majority of the company’s 58,000-strong frontline workforce. Insiders said there would be “clear disruption” to services, with some engineers unable to install phone lines or repair faulty services. Customers may also struggle to reach support staff on the phone.

Hm, gets flagged as malware by 1 AV engine out of 87 at virustotal.com so I'd think that's a false positive and the link is OK.

The Last Traditional Mailman of Amorgos, Greece

Nikolaos Rokos, the last traditional mailman on the island of Amorgos, Greece, retired in June after 36 years of walking up and down the steep alleys of Chora, the capital of the island, every single work day.

His replacement uses a car to deliver the mail.

Amorgos is one of those Greek islands where literally everyone does know each other, so sending a letter does not require adding a street address or postal code. “In many cases,” he says, “there are not even street names. But I know the recipient and where to go just by looking at the name.”

Rokos admits that, nowadays, there is less mail to distribute. The internet has largely supplanted physical mail now.

Amorgos became a tourist attraction in the late 1980’s when the island was the backdrop for the film The Big Blue.

Kef's too big for everyone to know everyone but out in the villages street names and house numbers are a bit rare.

Baby rabbits rescued from cement mixer in Cambridgeshire

Three baby rabbits are being cared for after being spotted tumbling around in a cement mixer.

Their nest was in sand on a building site in Cambridgeshire, and the sand had been shovelled into the mixer.

It was only when the mixer was turning that a builder saw something inside, stopped it, and realised what had happened.

‘Drop-in’ kit converts old Land Rovers into fully electric vehicles
Electric conversion can extend life of classic vehicle ‘by 200,000 miles’

The Land Rover Defender is an undisputed design classic, synonymous with agriculture and country living.

But as production has ceased in the UK, and no electric Land Rover Defender models are on the market, scientists at the University of Cardiff and electric-refit specialist firm Electrogenic have released a “drop-in” kit which converts old Defenders into fully electric vehicles.

According to the team, the kit includes an electric motor bolted onto the vehicle’s existing clutch bell housing which allows it to keep all of its gears, and includes a number of 52kWh batteries mounted under the bonnet.

The result is an electric engine with “comparable” power to the original combustion engines, meaning the vehicles retain their versatility for off-road terrain and heavy towing capability.

The kit can provide over 100 miles of range on-road, and “considerably more” when driving off-road or around a farm.

Exclusive: Three Red Wall Conservatives in talks to defect to Labour

Three Red Wall Conservative MPs are in defection talks with Labour, The Telegraph can reveal.

Labour sources told The Telegraph that the three male Conservatives, first elected in 2019, have entered formal discussions about crossing the floor to join Sir Keir Starmer’s party.

Those familiar with discussions said the MPs had slim majorities in Red Wall areas in the North that had historically voted Labour and believed they would lose their seats at the next election if they did not defect.

It is understood the three have felt dissatisfied with Boris Johnson’s leadership in recent weeks and were pushed towards the decision after a confidence vote in which 148 Tory MPs did not back the Prime Minister.

On Monday, two Conservative MPs who had been widely thought to have been considering defection denied they were planning to cross the floor.
