Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £ 0.9041 GBP
1 €UR = $ 1.0340 USD
£1 GBP = 1.1061 €UR
$1 USD = 0.9671 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Four states voted to end slavery as a form of criminal punishment. Here’s why Louisiana voters didn’t

he 13th Amendment of the US Constitution formally abolished slavery, but since it was enacted in the aftermath of the US Civil War in 1865, a notable exception has remained: Slavery is still allowed “as punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.”

Many state constitutions include similar language, meaning a devastating “loophole” has effectively kept slavery alive with forced labour in prisons across the US.

That exception remains in 20 states, allowing incarcerated workers “to be exploited, underpaid, and excluded from workplace safety protection laws,” according to a report from the American Civil Liberties Union and the University of Chicago Law School Global Human Rights Clinic.

Economists question 'black hole' in UK finances

A group of economists has questioned UK assertions that a "black hole" in the public finances will need to be filled with austerity measures and tax rises.

The Progressive Economy Forum said the £50bn "hole" disappears entirely if the debts are calculated differently.

The government previously used a different measure of debt, and going back to using that would leave £14bn to spare, they said.

The Treasury said the public finances would be assessed independently.

O Pronisos, the Poros Cultural Association, has implemented two feeding and watering stations for stray cats: one behind the beach near the 5-a-side football pitch (old tennis court) and another near the strait of Poros. Two more likely locations are Port port and somewhere convenient in the Lefkes area. Residents and visitors are invited to donate *dry* cat food (only) at the Community Centre opposite the Bailey bridge in Poros.

EU countries, lawmakers likely to clinch deal next week on satellite internet system, sources say

EU countries and European Parliament lawmakers are likely to reach a deal on a 6-billion-euro ($6 billion) satellite internet system next week, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday, driven by the bloc’s push to cut its dependency on foreign companies and the Ukraine war.

The EU scheme comes amid growing concerns about Russian and Chinese military advances in outer space and a surge in satellite launches.

Salto de Castro: Spanish village on sale for €260,000

For anyone dreaming of selling up and moving to the country, how about buying an entire village?

Salto de Castro, in north-western Spain, is up for sale and the asking price is €260,000 (£227,000).

Located on the border with Portugal in the province of Zamora and a three-hour drive from Madrid, Salto de Castro has many of the buildings you would expect to find in a small Spanish town.

They include 44 homes, a hotel, a church, a school, a municipal swimming pool and even a barracks building that used to house the civil guard.

But what it does not have are inhabitants. Salto de Castro has been abandoned for more than three decades.

Shocking video shows woman dragging dog behind mobility scooter
RSPCA rescues pet after 'sickening' footage was shared online

The RSPCA has rescued a dog that was filmed being dragged along a road by a woman driving a mobility scooter.

The video clip circulated online showed the dog was unable to stand as it was hauled along a street by its lead in Birmingham.

An RSPCA spokesperson said: "A dog who was seen in a video posted online has been seized by police and is now in RSPCA care and being checked over by a vet.

"Our enquiries are ongoing so we won't be releasing any further information at this time but we'd like to thank West Midlands Police for assisting with this investigation and helping to find the dog so quickly."

Man who had XL bulldog’s ears cropped is banned from keeping animals for two years

A man has been banned from keeping animals for two years after having his dog’s ears cropped.

Despite being told by his vet and the RSPCA that cropping his 15 week old XL bulldog’s ears was illegal Ramadan Murtati went ahead with it.

The 20-year-old returned to the vets for an unrelated vaccination with his puppy called Bully.

They could clearly see Bully’s ears were sore and red from recently being cropped through the cartilage and contacted the RSPCA who took the dog into their care.

RSPCA inspectors said they did not believe the pup had received any medication and no conventional surgical technique had been used, such as sutures or dressing for the ears.

Murtati... was disqualified from keeping all animals for two years... [and] was also fined £120 and ordered to pay costs of £150 and a £34 victim surcharge.

At the very minimum he should have been banned from having anything at all to do with any animal for the rest of his life.  At the very minimum.   :oki:

Malicious extension lets attackers control Google Chrome remotely

A new Chrome browser botnet named 'Cloud9' has been discovered in the wild using malicious extensions to steal online accounts, log keystrokes, inject ads and malicious JS code, and enlist the victim's browser in DDoS attacks.

The Cloud9 browser botnet is effectively a remote access trojan (RAT) for the Chromium web browser, including Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, allowing the threat actor to remotely execute commands.

The malicious Chrome extension isn't available on the official Chrome web store but is instead circulated through alternative channels, such as websites pushing fake Adobe Flash Player updates.

Google Chrome 107 Stable out with 10 security fixes

Google released a new stable version of the company's Chrome web browser yesterday. The Chrome 107 update patches 10 different security issues in the web browser.

Chrome desktop installations should receive the update automatically over the coming days and weeks. Administrators may speed up the upgrade by updating the browser manually.

To do that, it is necessary to open chrome://settings/help in the browser's address bar (you may also reach the internal page via Menu > Help > About Google Chrome). Chrome displays the current version and runs a check for updates. The browser should pick up the update at this point and install it automatically.

Chrome is up to date if the following version is listed on the page (it depend on the operating system)

*   Mac: 107.0.5304.110
*   Linux: 107.0.5304.110
*   Windows: 107.0.5304.106/.107
