Watch: Chaos at Paris-Roubaix as riders narrowly avoid onrushing train

The Paris-Roubaix one-day Classic was thrown into chaos today after a level crossing came down mid-race.

As the riders approached a level crossing with around 90 kilometres to go, a policeman desperately tried to prevent them from passing - with a train expected in the next few minutes.

Mass seal slaughter as RSPCA opts to protect fish farms

More than a quarter of the seals killed along the nation's coastline last year were shot by RSPCA-accredited fish farmers.

Andy Ottaway, of the Seal Protection Action Group, said: "We are as surprised as anyone that the RSPCA allows this to happen. It should be setting the bar and demonstrating that no supplier out there should be shooting seals."

A spokesman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) said there was no justification for shooting the animals and branded the Freedom Food scheme a misleading and "cruel" scam. "It is beyond outrageous that seals were wilfully deprived of their existence so that a supermarket could steal their only source of food," he said.
