Evidence of rabbits in UK in Roman times, say academics

Rabbits have been hopping around the UK since the Roman period, experts have been able to scientifically prove for the first time.

Tests on a rabbit bone, found at Fishbourne Roman Palace in West Sussex, have shown the animal was alive in 1AD.

Academics believe the animal could have been kept as an exotic pet.

Rabbits are native to Spain and France and it had been thought they were introduced to Britain during the medieval period.

Critically endangered New Zealand kakapo population boosted by record number of chicks
World’s heaviest parrot species is undergoing focused recovery programme

New Zealand’s critically endangered ground-dwelling parrot the kakapo, has hatched in record numbers during an unusually long breeding season, bringing hope the species, which was almost wiped out, can make a long-term recovery.

Over 70 chicks have been born – dramatically increasing the current adult population of the birds which was known to stand at 147.

While not all the chicks are expected to make it to adulthood, the figures are encouraging, according to New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DoC).

Bad News for Greeks as Souvlaki Price Set to Rise

The price of souvlaki, the iconic Greek delicacy, is set to rise by between 10 to 15 percent by May 1, the president of the newly established Association of Grill-Houses said on Thursday.

Speaking on Greek television, Giorgos Polyzos blamed the souvlaki spike on the rise in the price of meat, as well as high taxes and high insurance contributions.

Wrapped in pita bread, souvlaki will soon cost around three euros, the Grill House Association president said.
