Today’s bank rates:
1 €UR = £0.9146 GBP
1 €UR = $1.1138 USD
£1 GBP = 1.0934 €UR
$1 USD = 0.8978 €UR

Based on Alpha Bank exchange rates, these are widely used by exchange agencies in Greece.
Other banks likely to offer a different rate which may be marginally higher or lower.
Banks and foreign exchange offices normally charge standard 2% commission.
You may get a better rate changing your holiday money in advance at e.g the
Post Office.
NB: some f-ex agencies advertise "No Commission".
Invariably, they deduct commission before they (don't) advertise the rate.
Foreign exchange offices are businesses, not charities.

Police defend big jump in officers in UK schools

Police chiefs have defended a 43% year-on-year rise in the number of officers based in UK schools.

The Runnymede Trust race equality think tank found 979 Safer Schools Officers (SSOs) in schools last spring, compared with 683 in 2021.

It found SSOs are more likely to be based in schools with higher numbers of children on free school meals, often with higher numbers of black pupils.

But the National Police Chiefs' Council says SSOs play an essential role.

Britons paying 'through the roof' for international holidays, says Simon Calder

Britons looking to holiday abroad can expect to pay prices "through the roof," travel correspondent Simon Calder has said.

Speaking to LBC, Calder relayed information from TUI, saying that holidaymakers are spending more money on longer trips than they may have done before the coronavirus pandemic hit.

The travel agency's prices are now 23 per cent higher than in December 2019, according to a report by The Times.

"With airlines keeping flights one sixth below where they were and the same amount of demand coming back, prices are through the roof," Calder said.

Anti-smoking law to be updated to plug loopholes

Over the next three months the Health Ministry will seek to close the loopholes in the anti-smoking legislation that allow closed areas to be characterized as open-air, thus allowing people to smoke.

More specifically, the smoking of cigarettes will be expressly banned in cafes, bars, restaurants etc that are closed with canopies, plastic sheeting and other protective barriers.

It will do this, in cooperation with the relevant ministries, by updating the smoking ban legislation and providing a more precise description of the areas where smoking is prohibited, and by redefining the tobacco products whose use is prohibited in enclosed public places, taking into account all the new products that are on the market.

Met Police officer David Carrick admits to being serial rapist

A Metropolitan Police armed officer who used his role to put fear into his victims has admitted dozens of rape and sexual offences against 12 women.

David Carrick, 48, who met some victims through dating websites, pleaded guilty to 49 offences, across two decades.

The Met has apologised after it emerged he had come to the attention of police over nine incidents, including rape allegations, between 2000 and 2021.

A senior officer said his offending was "unprecedented in policing".

Mafia boss who dissolved boy in acid captured after 30 years on the run
Matteo Messina Denaro was detained at a private medical clinic in Palermo, Sicily

He was tried and sentenced to life in jail in absentia for the 1992 murders of two anti-mafia prosecutors, Paolo Borsellino and Giovanni Falcone.

He was also held responsible for the 1993 kidnap, torture and killing of a 12-year-old boy, the son of a mafia gangster who had become a “pentito” or state witness.

The boy, Giuseppe Di Matteo, was held in captivity for two years before he was strangled and his body dissolved in a barrel of acid.
