Britain’s ageing frigates are a gift in Greek navy deal

Two of Britain’s aged and retiring warships are to be offered to the Hellenic Navy to help Babcock International win a multibillion-pound deal with Greece to build new frigates and upgrade its fleet.

It is understood that Britain will throw in HMS Monmouth and HMS Montrose, two 30-year-old Type 23 vessels, in a proposed deal to equip the Greek naval forces with the Royal Navy’s newest class of frigate, the Type 31, in the face of perceived Turkish aggression.

Evolutionary ‘trap’ leading young sea turtles to ingest plastic, study says
Researchers find fragments in innards of species that have adapted to develop in open ocean, which has highly polluted areas

Young marine turtles are swallowing large quantities of plastic, with ocean pollution changing habitats that were once ideal for their development into a risk, researchers have found.

The impact of plastic on wildlife is a growing area of research, and studies have revealed harrowing cases of marine animals sustaining injuries or dying after ingesting such material or becoming entangled in it.

Could be a serious water shortage on Kef, reservoirs are emptying and people are asked not to wash cars, hose down yards, etc.

Firefighters battle blazes as Greece suffers ‘worst heatwave’ for three decades

Firefighters were battling two large wildfires in Greece on Monday, as the prime minister said the country was suffering its worst heatwave in more than three decades.

More than 3,000 hectares (7,400 acres) of pine and olive groves have been torched by a fire that broke out on Saturday near the city of Patras, 200 kilometres (125 miles) west of Athens, according to the National Observatory of Athens citing EU satellite images.

And the authorities were rushing to bolster crews fighting a blaze on the island of Rhodes.

Greece’s Santorini volcano erupts more often when sea level drops
Lower sea levels over the last 360,000 years are linked with more eruptions

A comparison of the activity of the volcano, which is now partially collapsed, with sea levels over the last 360,000 years reveals that when the sea level dips more than 40 meters below the present-day level, it triggers a fit of eruptions. During times of higher sea level, the volcano is quiet, researchers report online August 2 in Nature Geoscience.
