The small Greek settled town of Byzantion was renamed “Nova Roma” and declared the new capital of the Roman Empire by Emperor Constantine the Great, after whom it was renamed Constantinopolis. One of Constantine's acts was to declare Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. When the Western, Roman Catholic, empire collapsed around 476 AD the Eastern, Greek Orthodox, Empire continued for around another 1,000 years.
